The art of wise living involves four steps: Plan purposefully, prepare prayerfully, proceed positively and pursue persistently. The joy of wise living involves the art of joyous looking. There are two types of looking. You can look at the world with thoughts; you can also look at the world without thoughts, from a pure Being. When you look at the world with thoughts, then you should be aware of the subtle pollution that exists. Thoughts come from memory, memory is the representation of an experience of the past, and so from the past you see the present. Hence, pollution happens.

| | | | Happiness: The Ultimate Joy Is Inner Growth
Why do sad people attract sad incidences in life? Why do happy people attract happy situations in life? Depending on what state of being we are, we attract situations. We have to focus on heightening our state of being rather than changing situations in life. If our state of being is low, then the external situation, even though sacred, will be pulled down to our level of being. For example, a poor man in a palace will make the palace into a gutter.

| | | | Happiness: Sukha And Dukha - Rise Above Them
Sukha or happiness means different things to different people. This is especially so in the context of varying lifestyles prevalent today and the issues that a lot of us are living with and identifying ourselves with. Sukha in Indian philosophical systems is a heavily loaded term. To understand the quality of true sukha or happiness also means that we need to define dukha or suffering.

| | | | Happiness: The Small Boy And the Leaf
He was a small, thin boy with a mole on his face. But what he told our seventh standard class many years ago still bothers me. The moral science teacher had given us homework. We had been asked to pen an essay on ‘happiness'. We all thought it was easy. But when we started writing it, we realised our limitations. Some of us wrote about the happy moments surrounding birthdays; some spoke of the emotional highs on getting a first in class; others remembered kites and whoops of joy. But the small, thin boy saw nothing in the events that excited us. Nothing at all. He was uninterested.

| | | | | Happiness: Your Good Health Can Spread Cheer
Our lives are a series of experiences. Although these experiences appear to be linear, actually, they are not so. We discover this when we pause to carefully reflect on them. Life is a form of language with its own punctuation marks, much like the written language, where each punctuation mark has an unspoken meaning. I experienced the visible language of life recently when I was down with a viral fever with a severe chest congestion. I was completely dependent upon others to even get up on my feet. Without the care and support of my family, I would have had to be hospitalised. Because of the intensive care I received at home, I bounced back to good health within a reasonable period of time.

| | | | | Happiness: Value Systems for Total Competence
Despite the stupendous achievements in various fields today, peace and happiness continue to elude humankind. Although peace and happiness have to be generated from within, we have started relying more and more on external factors to solve our internal problems. The progress we see today is mainly of the external world. But, this is no measure of individual evolution. If the individual wants to be peaceful and happy, he must uplift himself.

| | | | Happiness: Spiritual Technique For Mind Repair - Vipassana
Vipassana is a self-observation technique taught by Gautama the Buddha. "Its origins were already lost in timeless antiquity", he had said. He rediscovered it in his prolonged search for a fundamental antidote to human misery. The Sakya crown prince who had already mastered every prevalent teaching in India of those times, realised that nothing, including systems of the famous Alara and Ramputta, touched deep-rooted impurities entrenched in his mind. Observing bodily sensations, he realised, led to hidden depths of the mind where our habit patterns are formed and multiplied.

| | | | Happiness: As You Sow, So You ReapWhatever you sow
by your actions come back to you. If you make others happy through service,
charity and kind acts, you sow happiness like a seed; and it will give you the
fruit of happiness. If you make others unhappy through harsh words, insult,
ill-treatment, cruel acts, oppression, etc., you sow unhappiness like a seed;
and it will give you the fruit of pain, suffering, misery and unhappiness. This
is the immutable Law of Karma.

All About Hinduism by Sri Swami Sivananda

| | | | Happiness: Nothing's Impossible When God is Present - about Jamshedji Navroze
Today, as the vernal equinox bathes the universe in a golden glow and Spring dances in seen and unseen splendour, it is amply clear that once you are with God, everything's possible. Today is Jamshedji Navroze , the original new year. It is celebrated by Parsees today - as it was by the people of ancient Iran - with good reason. The day marks the birth of Creation and therefore, your birth and mine too. It also celebrates Prophet Zarathushtra's profound pronouncements, the beauty and truth of which I've gleaned with my own limited vision from the scriptures.

Stress-free Action Brings Peace and JoyAction
is imperative for success and progress because otherwise, inactivity takes over
and leads to devolution. Activity, however, can generate a lot of stress in the
individual.
Progress,
therefore, is risky. When progress is gained at the expense of peace of mind,
it comes to lose its significance, because it does not translate into giving
happiness. And to achieve happiness is the goal of all activity. So thereÕs a
dilemma: How does one be dynamic and still achieve peace of mind?

| | | | Happiness: Free Your Self From Moha And Krodha
Buddhists do not deny that a conventional reality exists 'out there'. It appears substantial, solid, permanent and self-existent. In fact were it not so, then all scientific research would be futile, for, the main concern of science is to investigate the ultimate nature of reality of the physical universe. The madhyamika prasangika view of Mahayana Buddhism postulates that though beings exist in the conventional world, their existence is only through nomination, designation and mental imputation. When an investigation is made into the ultimate nature of phenomena and persons, a permanent self-existing entity cannot be found.

| | | | | Happiness: Selflessness Can Be A Huge Burden
If you are disappointed today about something, it does not mean that it is a permanent condition. There is always a tomorrow to look forward to. If you refuse to be optimistic or hopeful for the morrow, you will find yourself getting dragged into a whirlpool of despair, which is in itself a generator of unhappiness. Is there a secret, a magic formula for happiness? If there is, does it lie inside you or outside? Logically, it has to be inside you.
