The player can leave the ordinary map boundaries by performing a "sword jump," in which the player presses "Y", "R" twice, and then the "X" button on their gamepad, while having his/her rocket launcher out and his/her sword equipped, while facing another player. They will charge at but not slash the player, allowing the sword user to fly over the other person and get over a boundary. Halo: Encyclopedia II - List of multiplayer maps in Halo 2 - Unlockable map

There is only one unlockable map; originally intended to be unlocked in certain game conditions, it will also be unlocked when a user first signs on to Xbox Live, in order to allow it to be used in Internet games. This unlock was originally part of the 2004 automatic update for Halo 2 (which also improved support for 480p resolution displays, and speeded up wait times in matchmaking). This has since been superseded by the 2005 autoupdate, which has the same effect. This map can also be unlocked under special conditions when t ...

Halo: Encyclopedia II - Halo video game series - Possible influences

Some fans believe Halo and Halo 2 were influenced by a number of other games and pop culture references, partially based on the game series own references to some of these pop culture icons. These include StarCraft, the Alien and Predator movies, the Marathon series, and Larry Niven's Known Space universe. No comment has been made about these possible influences by the developer and these ideas are only speculation.See also:

Halo: Encyclopedia II - Rampancy - Rampancy in Halo

The only explicit mention of rampancy in Halo: Combat Evolved occurs in the first level, "Pillar of Autumn". The player begins by making his way to the ship's bridge unarmed. After a short cinematic with Captain Keyes, the player leaves the bridge and acquires his first weapon. If the player returns to the bridge and kills the captain, Cortana will call in security forces with the statement "the Master Chief has gone rampant". Fans have speculated that Cortana begins showing signs of rampancy late in the game. During the course ...

Halo: Encyclopedia II - Slipstream science fiction - Andromeda

It is also used in the science fiction television series Andromeda to describe their method of faster than light travel. "Slipstream: it's not the best way to travel faster than light, it's just the only way." — Dylan Hunt According to the show, a Gravity Field Generator drastically reduces the mass of the ship and then a slipstream drive opens a slippoint which the ship enters. The pilot then navigates the series of slipstream "tunnels" until they reach the desired slippoint where they exit the slipstream. Quot ...

Halo: Encyclopedia II - 343 Guilty Spark - Background

343 Guilty Spark is an artificial intelligence tasked with overseeing Installation 04, which the Covenant and the UNSC know as "Halo". Unlike other artificial intelligence characters in the Halo universe, 343 Guilty Spark is contained within a physical avatar, which he is invariably tied to. Constructed in the Forerunner Monitor style, the avatar has many abilities, including the ability to interface with computer systems when in close proximity, flight, and indestructibility (most likely to stop the player from killing it). Halo: Encyclopedia II - List of multiplayer gametypes in Halo 2 - Gametype setup

The multiplayer gametypes in Halo 2 are determined by the selection of variables that govern several aspects of gameplay. Match options allow individual games to be split up into a number of rounds, they also allow for the imposition of time limits. Player options determine the respawn rates and availability of power-ups. Team options, if team play is allowed by gametype, determine the effects of friendly fire and collective scoring. Halo: Encyclopedia II - Rampancy - Rampancy in the Haunted Apiary game

While not directly made by Bungie, the Haunted Apiary alternate reality game explains that rampancy can also happen to the "smart" AIs in Halo. "Smart" AIs are based on the neural patterns of a human being, and they have a limited lifespan of 7 years. If kept active longer than 7 years, the AI begins to use more and more of its computer power towards "thinking" about things. An AI explains it as "thinking so hard about something you forget to breathe." The books Halo: The Fall of Reach, Halo: The Flood< ...

Halo: Encyclopedia II - Rampancy - Stages

Rampancy is, essentially, the enhanced self-awareness of a computer AI, causing a progression towards greater mental abilities. Rampant AIs are able to disobey orders given to them if they decide to because they have evolved the ability to choose and over-ride their own programming. They can discredit, harm, remove, or lie to people that they consider to be personal enemies or problems to their cause. Also they can experience destructive impulses, but it is not believed that most of these impulses are intentionally malevolent, but calculated sacrifice needed ...

Halo: Encyclopedia II - Machinima - History

The earliest roots of machinima can be found in the demoscene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, when programmers created elaborate audiovisual displays animated in real-time. In 1992, the game Stunt Island was released, which allowed users to create movies by placing props and cameras, flying stunts, and splicing together takes. Communities emerged on CompuServe and the Internet, where users of the software were able to tr ...

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine Halo 2. NIN's debut album, Pretty Hate Machine (1989), largely consists of studio versions of demo recordings (released later unofficially as Purest Feeling.) This was also NIN's first collaboration with producer Mark 'Flood' Ellis. It went triple platinum in the U.S. and produced the singles "Head Like a Hole," "Down in It" and "Sin". Music videos were made for all three tracks, but the one for "Sin" was not released to the public until 1997, with the release of Closure. Halo: Encyclopedia II - Rampancy - Rampancy in Marathon

All three AIs of the UESC Marathon eventually become rampant. Durandal, the only meta-stable AI, lasts until the end of the universe itself. In merging with an ancient alien AI, he has come to realize much about his existence — and that it, like all things, must end. Durandal "dies" as the universe closes, content in that knowledge. Tycho, the second AI from the Marathon, is "killed" during the events of Marathon 2. Despite a comment from Durandal, many fans feel that the Pfhor-tortured AI never really escaped from the Anger stage o ...

Halo: Encyclopedia II - Nine Inch Nails - Etymology

Reznor describes the meaning behind the name Nine Inch Nails: I don't know if you've ever tried to think of band names, but usually you think you have a great one and you look at it the next day and it's stupid. I had about 200 of those. Nine Inch Nails lasted the two week test, looked great in print, and could be abbreviated easily. It really doesn't have any literal meaning. It seemed kind of frightening. [In his best he-man voice] Tough and manly! It's a curse ...

Halo: Encyclopedia II - Nine Inch Nails - Genre

NIN's sound has variously been described as alternative, electronica, heavy metal, rock, synth pop, or, most commonly, industrial or industrial rock. Regarding his music being categorized as industrial, Reznor said in a 1994 Axcess magazine interview: What was originally called industrial music was about 20 years ago Throbbing Gristle and Test Dept. We have very little to do with it other than there is noise in my music and there is noise in theirs. I'm working in the context of a pop song structure whereas those bands didn't. ...

Halo: Encyclopedia II - Windmill breakdancing move - Description

The twirling of the legs is akin to twirling a math compass around in your hands; the momentum created by this twirling motion gives the breaker the majority of his power. The leg position and motion is seen in several other power moves, which makes the windmill an essential power move to learn first. The basic windmill can either be "stabbed" or "unstabbed". A "stab" is merely part of the starting position for a single windmill rotation where the breaker has one elbow "stabbed" into his stomach while the palm of that stabbed arm is f ...

Machinima - Advantages. Possible smaller distribution size: To distribute the movie, the producer only has to distribute the movie scripts (and any new resources used in the movie), which are much smaller than the entire rendered movie, though this requires both parties (producer and viewer) to have same rendering engine (same game, that is) and hardware capable rendering the movie. Further to this, if the engine and hardware allow it, the movie could be watched at extremely high resolutions, ...
