Hail Mary: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Hail Mary

Hail Mary

Ave Maria, Rosary. Roman Catholic prayer based on Luke 1: 28.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen. "

The first part is taken from the Gospel of St. Luke and joins together the words of the Angel Gabriel at the Annunciation (Lk 1: 28) together with Elizabeth's greeting to Mary at the Visitation (Luke 1: 42). The joining of these two passages can be found as early as the fifth, and perhaps even the fourth, century in the eastern liturgies of St. James of Antioch and St. Mark of Alexandria. Later, probably by Pope Urban IV around the year 1262, Jesus' name was inserted at the end of the two passages.

The second half of the prayer (Holy Mary. ) can be traced back to the 15th century where two endings are found. One ending, Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, is found in the writings of St. Bernardine of Siena (1380-1444 AD) and the Carthusians. A second ending, Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis nunc et in hora mortis nostrae, can be found in the writings of the Servites, in a Roman Breviary, and in some German Dioceses.

The current form of the prayer became the standard form sometime in the 16th century and was included in the reformed Breviary promulgated by Pope St. Pius V in 1568

Hail Mary: Encyclopedia - Anbotoko Mari

Anbotoko Mari, Mari Urraca, la Dama de Anboto ("the lady of Anboto") and the possibly distinct Dama de Murumendi ("lady of Murumendi") was a goddess — a lamia — of the Basques. She was married to the god Majue. Legends connect her to the weather: that when she and Majue travelled together hail would fall, that her departures from her cave would be accompanied by storms or droughts, that which cave she lived in at different times would determine dry or wet weather: wet when she was in Anboto, dry when sh ...

Hail Mary: Encyclopedia - Angelus

The Angelus is a Roman Catholic devotion in memory of the Incarnation. It has its name from the opening words, Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ. It consists of three texts describing the mystery, recited as versicle and response alternately with the salutation "Hail, Mary!" This devotion is recited in the Catholic Church three times daily, about 6am, noon and 6pm. At these hours a bell known as the Angelus bell is rung. This is still rung in some English country churches, and has often been mistaken for an ...

Hail Mary: Encyclopedia - Blessed Virgin Mary

The Blessed Virgin Mary, sometimes shortened to The Blessed Virgin is a traditional title specifically used by Roman Catholics, Anglo-Catholics and others to describe Mary, the mother of Jesus. It carries with it a belief not merely in the virginity of Mary, but of her continuing role within the church and in the life of ordinary Catholics, for which Roman Catholicism in the Dogmatic Constitution of the Church (21 November 1964), passed during the Second Vatican Council, granted her the title Advocate, Auxiliatrix, Ad ...

Penance (from the Latin Poenitentia, the same root as penitence, which in English means repentence, the desire to be forgiven, see contrition; in many languages only one single word is derived) is the actual name of the Catholic Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (formerly called Confession). In this Sacrament, the penitent (repentent sinner, known as confessant) accuses himself of his sins to an ordained priest (known as confessor). Hail Mary: Encyclopedia - Immaculate Conception

The Immaculate Conception is a Catholic dogma that asserts that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was preserved by God from the stain of original sin at the time of her own conception. Specifically, the dogma says she was not afflicted by the privation of sanctifying grace that afflicts mankind, but was instead filled with grace by God, and furthermore lived a life completely free from sin. It is commonly confused with the doctrine of the virgin birth, though the two deal with separate subjects. Mary was conceived by normal biological means, ...
