Hagen: Encyclopedia II - Nibelungenlied - Synopsis

Siegfried is crown prince of Xanten, and has accomplished many feats, including the slaying of a dragon and the taking of a giant hoard of treasure. After killing the dragon, he bathes in its blood, making him invulnerable. Unfortunately for him, while he is bathing, a leaf falls off a linden tree above him and covers part of his skin, making that particular patch his weak spot, as with the story of Achilles's heel. Siegfried proposes to Kriemhild, the beautiful sister of Gunther, Gernot and Giselher, three Burgundian kings. He is all ...

Hagen: Encyclopedia II - Ruhr Area - Migration

In the 19th century the Ruhr area pulled over 1 million Poles from East Prussia and Silesia due to the event referred to as Ostflucht. Almost all of their descendants today speak German only and consider themselves Germans, with only their Polish family names remaining as a sign of their past. In 1900, the main concentrations of the Polish minority were: Gelsenkirchen, Landkreis (Provinz Westfalen) 13.1 % Bochum, Landkreis (Provinz Westfalen) 9.1 % Dortmund, Landkreis (Provinz Westfalen) 7.3 % Gelsenkirchen, Stad ...

Hagen: Encyclopedia II - Ruhr Area - Language

The local dialect of German is commonly called Ruhrdeutsch, although there is really no uniform dialect that justifies the designation of such one dialect. It is rather a working class sociolect with influences from the various dialects to be found in the area. The influx of foreign workers has introduced new expressions arising from the circumstances of industrial work and led to a form of slang typical of certain groups of people in the area. So there is no unified grammar or spelling of the Ruhrdeutsch variations avai ...

Hagen: Encyclopedia II - North Rhine-Westphalia - Flag

The flag of North Rhine-Westphalia is green-white-red with the combined coats of arms of the Prussian Rhine province (white line before green background), Westphalia (the white horse) and Lippe (the red rose). According to legend the horse in the Westphalian coat of arms is the horse that the Saxon leader Widukind rode after his baptism. Other theories attribute the horse to Henry the Lion. ...

Hagen: Encyclopedia II - RAF Bomber Command - Casualties

About two thirds of the 500,000 to 600,000 (conservative estimates are 300,000) casualties of the bombings of German cities died during attacks by Bomber Command. One of the most controversial aspects of Bomber Command during WWII was the area bombing of cities. Navigational technologies of the day, until late in the war, did not allow for much more precisely targeting than a town or city, or at the very smallest an area of a city, by night bombing. All large German cities contained important industrial areas, and so were considered legitima ...

Hagen: Encyclopedia II - RAF Bomber Command - Bomber Command 1946 – 1968

In the aftermath of the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it was clear that the world had changed. In addition, the coming of the jet presaged an equally important change. In order for Bomber Command to keep up technologically in the early postwar years, B-29 Superfortresses were pressed into service as the Boeing Washington. However, they, and the Avro Lincoln, were only stopgap measur ...

Hagen: Encyclopedia II - North Rhine-Westphalia - History

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia was established by the British military administration in 1946. Originally it consisted of Westphalia and the northern parts of the Rhine Province, both formerly belonging to Prussia. In 1947 the former state of Lippe was merged with North Rhine-Westphalia, hence leading to the present borders of the state. The North Rhine-Westphalia state election on May 22, 2005 granted the CDU a landslide victory. Their top candidate Jürgen Rüttgers built a new coalition government consisting of CDU and FDP tha ...

Hagen: Encyclopedia II - Fritz Witt - Early Life - Pre-War SS Service

Fritz Witt was born on 27 May 1908 in Hohenlimburg, a suburb of the city of Hagen. Witt's family was middle class, his father being employed as a textiles salesman. After attending school Witt followed his father's trade, working as a textiles salesman from 1925 until 1931. During this period of time, he witnessed the rise of Adolf Hitler and the NSDAP, becoming a strong supporter. Witt saw the Nazis as the answer to the chaos and poverty of the Weimar Republic. On 1 December 1931, Witt applied to join both the NSDAP (Nr.816 769) and the SS ...
