| | | | Guiding Light: Encyclopedia II - M113 - DesignThe M113 was the first American modern "battle taxi", developed to transport infantry forces on the mechanized battlefield; it requires a crew of two and can carry an additional eleven infantry. Its main armament is a single .50 cal (12.7 mm) M2 machine gun, with secondary armament depending on the vehicle's role. The M113 is built of aircraft quality aluminium which gives it some of the same strengths as steel at a slightly reduced weight (the vehicle weighs approximately 13 tons). Its weight allows the use of a relatively small engine to p ...

With humourous illustrations by David Neilson, and later by Glasgow artist and playwright John Byrne, the book became very popular in Glasgow and the rest of Scotland, and was followed up by The Patter - Another Blast in 1988, with The Complete Patter, an updated compendium of the first and second books, being published in 1996.
To date, these books are probably the best written guide for anyone wi ...

| | | | Guiding Light: Encyclopedia II - Photon torpedo - BackgroundPhoton torpedoes are most useful for combat while ships are engaged in warp speed travel, as phasers, which are confined to the speed of light, are not generally usable. The Starfleet Technical Manual does list a number of ways a phaser can be used at greater-than-light speeds, though, as several television episodes have violated the prior "rule."
Starfleet, the military/exploratory arm of Federation, uses a number of different versions of the photon torpedo with various guided, un-guided, and high-speed versions. The Mark IV and Mark V torpedoes are micro torpedoes that are used aboard small sh ...

| | | | Guiding Light: Encyclopedia II - Atom interferometer - Interferometer typesContrary to light, atoms are subject to gravity. In some apparatus, the atoms are ejected upwards and the interferometry takes place while the atoms are in flight, sometimes they are measured while falling in free flight. Yet other experiments do not negate gravitational effects by free accleration, but use additional forces to compensate for gravity. While these guided systems in principle can provide arbitrary amounts of measurement time, their quantum coherence is still under discussion. Recent theoretical studies indicate however, that coherence is indeed preserved in the guid ...

| | | | Guiding Light: Encyclopedia II - Optical fiber - Optical descriptionAn optical fiber (american spelling) or fibre (english spelling) is a cylindrical dielectric waveguide that transmits light along its axis, by the process of total internal reflection. The fiber consists of a core surrounded by a cladding layer. For the fiber to guide the optical signal the refractive index of the core must be greater than that of the cladding so that light can be confined to the guiding layer by total internal reflection. The boundary between the core and cladding may either be abrupt, in step-index ...
