| ARTICLES RELATED TO Guide | | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Guiding Light - HistoryThe series was created by Irna Phillips, who based it on personal experiences. After giving birth to a still-born baby at age 19, she found spiritual comfort listening to sermons by a preacher of a church centered on the brotherhood of man. It was these sermons that formed the nucleus of the creation of The Guiding Light.
Guiding Light - The radio years.
The radio show's original storyline centered around a preacher named Rev. John Ruthledge (Arthur Peterson, Jr.) and all the people of a fictional s ...

| | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Style guide - OverviewTraditionally, a style guide (often called a style manual or stylebook) dictates what form of language should be used. These style guides are principally used by academia and publishers.
In such works, style can have two meanings:
Publication conventions for markup style, such as whether book and movie titles should be written in italics; expression of dates and numbers; how references should be cited.
Literary considerations of prose style, such as best usage, common errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling; and suggestions for precision, fairness and the m ...

| | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - A Guide for the Perplexed - AdequatenessFor Schumacher, the great truth of adequateness is that nothing can be known without an appropriate instrument in the make up of the knower. Everything around us must be matched with some faculty within us, otherwise we remain unaware of its existence. He quotes Plotinus "Knowing demands the organ fitted to the object."[10]
Schumacher explains that the bodily senses are adequate for perceiving inanimate matter; but we need 'intellectual' senses f ...

| | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - A Guide for the Perplexed - ReflectionsSchumacher's treatise is as relevant today as when it first written. It is a book that is highly popular among the religious and spiritual community, because it provides a powerful defence for the religious and spiritual spheres that is grounded solely in scientific argument.
Schumacher's argument stands or falls on his view that there are levels of being, that there are ontological differences between mineral, life, animal and human. The dominant scientific view still remains that there is no such differentiation of being, and so from that perspec ...

| | | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Guide for the Perplexed - TranslationsThe original version of the Guide was written in Arabic. The first Hebrew translation was written by a contemporary of Maimonides, Samuel ben Judah ibn Tibbon (south France). This Hebrew edition has been used for many centuries.
The first complete English translation was "The Guide for the Perplexed", by M. Friedlander, with Mr. Joseph Abrahams and Reverevd H. Gollancz, in 1881. It was originally published in a two volume edition with footnotes. In 1904 it was republished in a cheaper one volume edition, without footnotes, with revisi ...

| | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Michelin Guide - ControversyThe Michelin guides have been the centre of various controversies.
Michelin Guide - Loiseau affair.
In February, 2003, Bernard Loiseau, a prominent French chef with a history of bipolar disorder, committed suicide when his widely-admired restaurant Côte d'Or in Saulieu, Burgundy, was rumoured to be in danger of a downgrade by Michelin from three to two stars. However, most news reports attributed this suicide to a downgrade by the rival Gault Millau guide, the Michelin guide having stated he would not be downgraded.

| | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Guide for the Perplexed - StructureThe work is divided into three books.
Guide for the Perplexed - Book One.
The book begins with Maimonides' thesis against anthropomorphism. In the Bible, one can find many expressions which describe God in human terms, for instance the "hand of God". Maimonides was strongly against what he believed to be a heresy present in unlearned Jews who then assume God to be cor ...

| | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Michelin Guide - HistoryIn 1900, André Michelin published the first edition of a guide to France to help drivers maintain their cars, find decent lodging, and eat well while touring. It included addresses of gasoline distributors, garages, tyre stockists, public toilets, etc.
The guide was distributed free until 1920. According to a story told by the Michelin brothers, the charge was introduced after a pile of guides was found propping up a workbench in a garage, showing that a free gift would not be taken seriously. In 1926, the guide introduced the star t ...

| | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - A Guide for the Perplexed - Levels of beingFor Schumacher one of sciences major mistakes has been rejecting the traditional philosophical and religious view that the universe is a hierarchy of being. Schumacher makes an elegant restatement of the traditional chain of being.
Schumacher agrees with the traditional view that there are four kingdoms:
Mineral
Plant
Animal
Man
Schumacher argues that there are critical differences of kind between each level of being. Between mineral and plant is the phenomenon of life, As Schumach ...

| | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - A Guide for the Perplexed - Two types of problemSchumacher argues that there are two types of problems in the world:
convergent
divergent
For Schumacher recognising which type a problem is is one of the arts of living.
Convergent problems are ones in which attempted solutions gradually converge on one solution or answer. An example of this has been the development of the bicycle. Early attempts at developing man powered vehicle included three and four wheelers; and involved wheel ...

| | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - A Guide for the Perplexed - The tasks of manSchumacher notes that within philosophy there is no field in more disarray than ethics. | | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Style guide - Academia and publishingStyle guides used by publishers set out rules for language use, such as for spelling, italics and punctuation. A major purpose of these style guides is consistency. They are rulebooks for writers to ensure language is used consistently. Authors are often asked or required to use a style guide in preparing their work for publication. Copy editors are charged with enforcing the style.
Style guides used by universities are particularly rigorous in their preferred style for citing sources. Their use is required of scho ...

| | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Michelin Guide - Red and Green GuidesThe Michelin Red Guide has historically had many more listings than its rivals, relying on an extensive system of symbols to describe each establishment in as little as two lines. Restaurants rated with a star also listed three specialities. Recently, however, very short summaries (2-3 lines) have been added for many establishments, for example 9,000 in France. These short summaries are written in the language of the country for which it is published, but the symbols are universal. | | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - A Guide for the Perplexed - Critique of materialistic scientismSchumacher was very much in favour of the scientific spirit; but felt that the dominant methodology within science, which he called materialistic scientism was flawed; and stood in the way of achieving knowledge in any other arena than inanimate nature. Schumacher believed that this flaw originated in the writings of Descartes and Francis Bacon, when modern science was first established.
Schumacher makes a distinction between the descriptive and instructional sciences. According to Schumacher the descriptive sciences are primarily con ...

| | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - A Guide for the Perplexed - Four fields of knowledgeSchumacher identifies four fields of knowledge for the individual:
I → inner
I → other persons
other persons → I
I → the world
Schumacher notes that humans only have direct access to fields one and four.
Field one is being aware of your feelings and thoughts and most closely correlates to self awareness. Schumacher argues this is fundamentally the study of attention. He differentiates between when your attention is captured by the item it focuses upon, which is when a human ...

| | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Style guide - General interestOther style guides have as their audience the general public. Some of these adopt a similar approach to style guides for publishing houses and newspapers.
Others, such as Fowler's Modern English Usage (3rd edition) report how language is used in practice in a given area, outline how phrases, punctuation and grammar are actually used. Since they are for the general public, they cannot require one form of a word or phrase to be preferred over another, though they may make recommendations, and sometimes strong recommendations at that. These guides can be used by anyone interes ...
