 | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - A Guide for the Perplexed - ArtSchumacher in a digression from his main argument discusses the nature and importance of art. He notes that there is considerable confusion about the nature and meaning of art; but argues that this confusion dissipates when one considers art with relation to its affect on human beings. Most art fits into two categories. If art is designed to primarily affect our feelings then it is entertainment; while if art is primarily d ...

 | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Guide for the Perplexed - How to read the GuideBy Maimonides' own design, most readers of the Guide have come to the conclusion that his beliefs were generally orthodox, i.e. in line with the thinking of most rabbis of his day. However the great majority of Maimonidean scholars hold that this is not correct. Many readers miss Maimonides' statement that he will not openly state any controversial views. He wrote that his Guide was addressed to only a select and educated readership, and that he is proposing ideas that are deliberately concealed from the masses. He writes in the introduction ...

 | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Field guide - HistoryPopular interest in identifying things in nature probably were strongest in bird and plant guides. In 1902, Florence Merriam Bailey, wife of well-known zoologist Vernon Bailey wrote a Handbook of Birds of the Western United States which was arranged by taxonomic order and had clear descriptions of species size, distribution, feeding and nesting habits, resembling the modern field guide. From this point to the 1930s, many much more modern parts of field guides were tried out by Chester A. Reed and others such as changing the size of the book to fit the pocket, including color plates, and different subjects such as garden ...

 | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Guiding Light - 1980sThe 1980s was a time of many transitions and many firsts for the show.
In 1980, the Dobsons were moved to ATWT, and replaced by Douglas Marland. Marland had written for such veteran soap writers as Agnes Nixon and Irna Phillips (the creator of The Guiding Light) and had written on his own, as well as acted on ATWT in the early 1970's. From January 1980 to June 1982 Marland, as head writer, decided he wanted to bring Guiding Light back to its roots and abide by the show's bible as Marland was fond of ...

 | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Guiding Light - RadioThe series was created by Irna Phillips, who based it on personal experiences. After giving birth to a still-born baby at age 19, she found spiritual comfort listening to sermons by a preacher of a church centered on the brotherhood of man. It was these sermons that formed the nucleus of the creation of The Guiding Light.
From 1947 to 1949, the show was broadcast from Hollywood, but in the fall of 1949 the show moved to New York City where it has remained.

 | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Guiding Light - 1960sAgnes Nixon wanted to see social issues worked into the plot, and set the tone for much of the material used during the 1960's. In 1966, Nixon left the show to create the ABC series, One Life to Live.

 | | | Guide: Encyclopedia II - Guiding Light - 1970sFeeling pressure from newer, more youth-oriented soaps such as The Young and the Restless, Procter & Gamble hired headwriters Bridget Dobson and Jerome Dobson in 1975. The married duo focused on core characters, giving Bert her first real story in years when her husband Bill came back from the dead. The Dobsons also created one of the sexiest and most complicated "vixens" in the show's history when nurse Rita Stapleton arrived in Springfield with her sweet sister Eve and mother Viola. The Dobsons also beefed up some of the ...
