Historically and economically the most important part of Messinia is the great plain, consisting of two distinct portions, watered by the river Pamisus (mod. Pirnatza) and its affluents. This is the most fertile tract in Greece, and at the present day produces oranges, citrons, almonds, figs, grapes and olives in great abundance and of excellent quality. The plain, is bounded on the north by the Nomian Mountains (modern Tetrási, around 1,570 m, 5210 ft.) and their westerly extension, on the west by the mountains of Cyparissia (around 1,300 ...

Great Plains: Encyclopedia II - Great Zimbabwe - Description

An early European explorer, Viçente Pegado, Captain of the Portuguese Garrison of Sofala, described Zimbabwe thus, in 1531: "Among the gold mines of the inland plains between the Limpopo and Zambezi rivers there is a fortress built of stones of marvelous size, and there appears to be no mortar joining them.... This edifice is almost surrounded by hills, upon which are others resembling it in the fashioning of stone and the absence of mortar, and one of them is a tower more than 12 fathoms [22 m] high. The natives of the country call these edifices Symbaoe, which accord ...

Great Plains: Encyclopedia II - Westbury Wiltshire - Features and History

Westbury is sometimes known as Westbury-under-the-Plain to distinguish it from other towns of the same name. Westbury nestles under the north-western bluffs of Salisbury Plain, and it is there that the town's most famous feature can be seen: the Westbury White Horse. It is believed that the White Horse was originally cut into the chalk face to commemorate the victory of King Alfred the Great over the Danes in the Battle of Eðandun (nearby Edington) in 878. Its original form was probably quite different from the horse seen today. The form of ...

Great Plains: Encyclopedia II - Tisza - Control of the Tisza

The length of the Tisza in Hungary used to be 1419 km. It flowed through the Great Hungarian Plain, which is one of the largest flat areas in central Europe, and since plains can cause a river to flow very slowly the Tisza used to follow a path with lots of curves and turns. Mainly for this reason, many large floods occurred in the area. After several small-scale attempts István Széchenyi organised the "control of the Tisza" ("a Tisza szabályozása") which started on August 27, 1846 and substantially ended in 1880. The result: the new length of the river in Hungary was 966 km, with 589 km ...

Great Plains: Spiritual Theosophical Dictionary on Birs Nimrud

Birs Nimrud (Chald.). Believed by the Orientalists to be the site of the Tower of Babel. The great pile of Birs Nimrud is near Babylon. Sir H. Rawlinson and several Assyriologists examined the excavated ruins and found that the tower consisted of seven stages of brick-work, each stage of a different colour, which shows that the temple was devoted to the seven planets. Even with its three higher stages or floors in ruins, it still rises now 154 feet above the level of the plain. ("See Borsippa".)
