Gothicism: Encyclopedia II - Gothic art - Gothic painting

Painting in a style that can be called "Gothic" did not appear until about 1200, or nearly 50 years after the start of Gothic architecture and sculpture. The transition from Romanesque to Gothic is very imprecise and not at all a clear break, but we can see the beginnings of a style that is more somber, dark and emotional than the previous period. This transition occurs first in England and France around 1200, ...

Gothicism: Encyclopedia - Clerestory

Clerestory or ("clear storey"), in architecture, denotes an upper storey of a Roman basilica or of the nave of a Romanesque or Gothic church, the walls of which rise above the rooflines of the lower aisles and are pierced with windows. The Romans also in their basilica-form baths and palaces employed the same method, and probably derived the clerestory from Hellenistic architecture of the Greeks. Sometimes these windows are very small, being mere quatrefoils or spherical triangles. In large buildings, however, they are importan ...

Gothicism: Encyclopedia II - Gothic novel - Origins of the gothic novel

The term "gothic" was originally a disparaging term applied to a style of medieval architecture (Gothic architecture) and art (Gothic art). The opprobrious term "gothick" was embraced by the 18th century proponents of the gothic revival, a forerunner of the Romantic genres. Gothic revival architecture, which became popular in the nineteenth century, was a reaction to the classical architecture that was a hallmark of the Age of Reason. In a way similar to the gothic revivalists' rejection of the clarity and rationalism of the neoclassi ...

Gothicism: Encyclopedia II - Gothic architecture - Gothic in the 20th Century

Neo-Gothic continued to be considered appropriate for churches and college buildings well into the 20th century. Charles Donagh Maginnis's early buildings at Boston College helped establish the prevalence of Collegiate Gothic architecture on American university campuses, such as at Chicago, Princeton and Yale. It was also used, perhaps less appropriately, for early steel skyscrapers. Cass Gilbert produced his 1907 90 West Street building and the 1914 Woolworth Building, both in Manhattan, in a neo-Gothic idiom. It was Raymond Hood's n ...

Gothicism: Encyclopedia II - Gothic novel - The first gothic novels

The term "gothic" came to be applied to the literary genre precisely because the genre dealt with such emotional extremes and dark themes, and because it found its most natural settings in the buildings of this style -- castles, mansions, and monasteries, often remote, crumbling, and ruined. It was a fascination with this architecture and its related art, poetry (see Graveyard Poets), and even landscape gardening that inspired the first wave of gothic novelists. For example, Horace Walpole, whose The Castle of Otranto is often regarde ...

Gothicism: Encyclopedia II - Gothic metal - History

Gothic metal - The Beginnings 1983-1993. The earliest stage of gothic metal can be traced to bands in the 1980s, who utilised gothic rock aesthetics with aspects of composition akin to doom metal. Bands of this type are credited mainly for their later influence on the subgenres, doom-death and gothic-doom. Although Glenn Danzig's Samhain made some attribution to this manner of composition, Death rock band Christian Death are regarded by some as the most influential to the founding of the subgenre. The deep vocal ...

Gothicism: Encyclopedia II - Gothic art - Gothic sculpture

Gothic sculpture was born on the wall, in the middle of the 12th century in Île-de-France, when Abbot Suger built the abbey at St. Denis (ca. 1140), considered the first Gothic building, and soon after the Chartres Cathedral (ca. 1145). Prior to this there had been no sculpture tradition in Ile-de-France—so sculptors were brought in from Burgundy, who created the revolutionary figures acting as columns in the Western (Royal) Portal of Chartres Cathedral (see image)—it was an entirely new invention, and would p ...

Gothicism: Encyclopedia II - Gothic Lolita - Gothic Lolita in the West

Many Goth girls in the west, have borrowed from the Japanese goth loli style, and have created a market for this style of clothing (particulary in online auctions). Americas Tokyopop recently comissioned, along with performer Courtney Love (who is not goth/goth loli herself, but is a former Japanese resident) an original manga in the goth loli style, called Princess Ai. This was the first (at least publicised) Japan/West goth loli collaboration. < ...
