Gospel of John: Encyclopedia - Gospel of John

The Gospel of John is the fourth gospel in the sequence of the canon as printed in the New Testament, and scholars agree it was the fourth to be written. Like the other three gospels, it contains an account of the life of Jesus. The Church Fathers believed only The Gospel of John and The Gospel of Matthew to be written by apostles of Jesus. The Gospel of John is the most divergent of the four. While the "beloved disciple," who is traditionally identified as John the Apostle, has previously been regar ...

Gospel of John: Encyclopedia II - Gospel of John - Sources
A hypothesis elaborated by German bibilical scholar Rudolf Bultmann in Das Evangelium des Johannes, 1941 (translated as The Gospel of John: A Commentary, 1971), suggested that the author of John depended in part on an oral miracles tradition or a written manuscript of Christ's miracles that was independent of the synoptic gospels, whose authors did not use it. This has been labelled a "Signs Gospel" and alleged to have been circulating before AD 70: evidently it is lost. Even readers who doubt that such a document can be ...

Gospel of John: Encyclopedia II - Gospel of John - Structure

After the prologue (1:1-5), the narrative of this gospel begins with verse 6, and consists of two parts. The first part, called "the Book of Signs" (1:6-ch. 12) contains the story of Jesus' public ministry from the time of his baptismal initiation by John the Baptist to its close. In this first part, John chooses seven of Jesus's miracles, always calling them "signs." The second part, called "the Book of Glory" (ch. 13-21) presents Jesus in the retirement of private life and in his dialog with his immediate followers (13-17), and gives an ac ...

Gospel of John: Encyclopedia II - Gospel of John - Authorship and date

Main article: Authorship of the Johannine works Though most scholars agree in placing the gospel of John somewhere between AD 65 and 85, some scholars place the writing of the final edition of John later in the first or early second century. The text itself states only that the Fourth Gospel was written by an anonymous follower of Jesus referred to as the Beloved Disciple. Traditionally he was identified as John the Apostle, who was bel ...

Gospel of John: Encyclopedia - Gospel of Mark

The Gospel of Mark is traditionally the second of the New Testament Gospels. It narrates the life of Jesus from his baptism by John the Baptist to his resurrection, but it concentrates particularly on the last week of his life. Usually dated around AD 65-80, it is regarded by most modern scholars as the earliest of the canonical gospels, contrary to the traditional view of the Augustinian hypothesis. Gospel of John: Encyclopedia - Authorship of the Johannine works

The Johannine works are the Gospel of John, the first, second, and third epistles of John, and the Book of Revelation. All five show certain similarities in theological background, but also certain differences, leading to the current debate. All of these books of the New Testament have traditionally been attributed to John the Apostle, assumed to be identical to John the Evangelist; however, especially since the rise of higher criticism, the question of the authorship of the Johannine works has been disputed. Before the rise of ...

Gospel of John: Encyclopedia - John the Evangelist

John the Evangelist (? - c. 110; יוחנן "The LORD is merciful", Standard Hebrew Yoḥanan, Tiberian Hebrew Yôḥānān) is the name used to refer to the author of the Gospel of John. Tradition has identified him with John the Apostle and with John of Patmos, the author of the Book of Revelation. Gospel of John: Encyclopedia - Diatessaron

Tatian's Diatessaron was one of a number of harmonies of the four Gospels, that is, the material of the four distinct Gospels rewritten as a continuous narrative resolving conflicting statements, and removing duplicates. Only 56 verses in the canonical Gospels do not have a counterpart in the Diatessaron, the bulk of the excluded material comprising the two apparently irreconcilable genealogies of Jesus (one in the Gospel of Matthew and one in the Gospel of Luke), together with the pericope of the adulteress (John 7:53 - 8:11). ...

Gospel of John: Encyclopedia - Criterion of embarrassment

The Criterion of Embarrassment is a tool used by New Testament scholars to determine whether certain actions or sayings by Jesus in the New Testament are historically authentic or not. As a notable example, the Baptism of Jesus would have been doubly embarrassing, since the story suggests that Jesus had need of being cleansed from sins, and that he submitted to the authority of John the Baptist. The Gospel of Matthew copes with the embarrassment by having John tell Jesus "I should be baptized by you." Gospel of John goes further and s ...

Gospel of John: Encyclopedia - Evangelism

Evangelism is the preaching of the Christian Gospel or, by extension, any other form of preaching or proselytizing. The word evangelist comes from the Koine Greek word εὐάγγελος ("eu-angelos"), meaning bringer of good news. The Koine expression for good news, εὐάγγελιον ("eu-angelion") is used to refer to the four Gospels in the New Testament; and thus the Evangelists are also the authors of the four Gospels -- traditionally known as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Gospel of John: Encyclopedia - John the Baptist

John the Baptist (also called John the Baptizer or Yahya the Baptizer) is regarded as a prophet by at least three religions: Christianity, Islam, and Mandaeanism. According to the Gospel of Luke 1:36 (NRSV)[1], he was a relative of Jesus. That he was a prophet is asserted by the Synoptic Gospels and the Qur'an (see also prophets of Islam). Gospel of John: Encyclopedia - First Epistle of John

The First Epistle of John is a book of the Bible New Testament. It the fourth of the catholic or "general" epistles. It was traditionally held to have been written by John the Evangelist, and probably also at Ephesus, and when the writer was in advanced age.
