The Confessing Movement is a neo-Evangelical movement within several mainline Protestant denominations to return those churches to what the members of the movement see as theological orthodoxy. It relates and cross pollinates with other conservative Christian movements such as Evangelicals, Pentecostals, Holiness groups, Anabaptists, and Fundamentalists. Its members have a stated committment to remain in their home denominations, unless forced out, to stay and work for reform from within, in contrast to what they see as other m ...

good news: Encyclopedia II - Gospel - Canonical Gospels

Of the many gospels written in antiquity, exactly four gospels came to be accepted as part of the New Testament, or canonical. An insistence upon a canonical four, and no others, was a central theme of Irenaeus of Lyons, c. 185. In his central work, Adversus Haereses Irenaeus denounced various Christian groups that used only one gospel, such as Aramaic Matthew, as well as groups that embraced the texts of new revelations, such as the Valentinians (A.H. 1.11.9). Irenaeus declared that the four he espoused were the four pi ...

Confessing Movement - Presbyterian. One of the fastest growing Confessing Movements is within the Presbyterian Church (USA). In February, 2002 more than 800 laity, pastors, deacons, and elders gathered in Atlanta, Georgia for the first National Celebration of Confessing Churches. Participating churches affirm that Christ is the only way of salvation, that the Bible is infallible in its teachings, and that sexual relations are exclusively for marriage. More than 1,200 of the denomination's 11,000 congregations have adopted such declaratio ...

good news: Encyclopedia II - Gospel - Liturgical usage

In many Christian churches, all Christians present stand when a passage from one of the Gospels is read publicly, and sit when a passage from a different part of the Bible is read. The reading of the Gospels, often contained in a liturgical edition containing only the four Gospels, is traditionally done by a minister or priest, and in many traditions is brought into the midst of the congregation to be read. Gospel - ...

Confessing Movement - Uniting Church in Australia. After a 2003 decision not to make an outright ban on the ordination of practicing homosexuals, conservative members of the church formed The Reforming Alliance in order to discuss the issues and work out a strategy. This process was helped by another group called Evangelical Members within the Uniting Church in Australia (EMU) which had been formed in the early 1990s as a conservative response to what is ...

good news: Encyclopedia II - Confessing Movement - The Confessing Movement in the churches

A large group of laity and a somewhat smaller group of clergy within the mainline churches have protested that their denominations have been hijacked by those who, in their view, have 'forsaken Christianity' and embraced moral relativism to accommodate secular society. They reject church leaders such as United Methodist Bishop Joseph Sprague of Chicago and Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Spong as apostate. Although many issues are longstanding, the trigger that led to the formation of the Confessing Movement was the acceptance or the pos ...

good news: Encyclopedia II - Gospel - Non-canonical gospels

In addition to the four canonical gospels there have been other gospels that were not accepted into the canon. Some of these works appear to be later compositions than the canonical gospels, and as such were only ever accepted by small portions of the early Christian community. Some of the content of these non-canonical gospels (as much as it deviates from accepted theological norms) is considered heretical by the leadership of mainstream churches, including the Vatican. The tw ...
