God the Father: Encyclopedia II - God the Father - God the Father in monotheism
In two of the three major forms of monotheism, Judaism and Christianity, God is called the Father in part because he is thought to take an active interest in human affairs, in the way that a father would take an interest in his children. Thus, many monotheists believe they can communicate with him through prayer, either to praise him or to affect his behavior. They expect that as a Father, he will respond to humanity, his children, acting in our best interests, even punishing those who misbehave like a father punishes his children, to restor ...

God the Father: Encyclopedia II - Father Divine - Preaching as God: 1912-1965

Father Divine - In the South: 1912-1914. The Messenger traveled south. He preached extensively in Georgia. In 1913, conflicts with local ministers got him sentenced to 60 days in a chain gang. While serving his sentence, several prison inspectors were injured in an auto accident, which The Messenger viewed as the direct result of their disbelief. Upon release, The Messenger attracted a following of mostly black women in Valdosta, Georgia. He taught celibacy and the rejection of gender categorizations, which was liberating doctrine f ...

God the Father: You Are The Father And Son Of God

Knowledge is divided between phenomenology, science of the changeable and ontology, science of the unchangeable. Ontology is the realm of being and phenomenology that of becoming.

To explain it to the laity, Christianity uses the word 'Father' for ontology and 'Son' for phenomenology. The Holy Spirit is individualised consciousness that mediates the two.

God the Father: Encyclopedia - Sky father

The sky father is a recurring theme in pagan and neopagan mythology. The sky father is the complement of the earth mother and appears in some creation myths, many of which are European or ancient Near Eastern. Other cultures have quite different myths; Egyptian mythology features a sky mother and an earthly dying and reviving god of vegetation. Shinto gives precedence to a sun goddess. A sky father also relates to a solar deity, a god identified with the sun. In Maori mythology, Ranginui was the sky father. In this story, the sky father and earth moth ...

God the Father: Encyclopedia - Adam-God theory

The Adam-God theory (also called the Adam-God doctrine) was a teaching by Brigham Young, that Adam "is our Father and our God, and the only God with whom we have to do." (1 J.D. 50-51). Some of Young's contemporaries interpreted the doctrine as stating that Adam was the God of this earth and the father of Jesus, and as so interpreted, the doctrine was unpopular and confusing even among some contemporary Latter-day Saint leaders such as Orson Pratt and Amasa M. Lyman, and by some of the Mormon p ...

God the Father: Lord’s Prayer: Common Prayer For Uncommon Wisdom

The Lord’s Prayer ("Our Father Who Art in Heaven...") is the best known and most popular prayer of Christians. Jesus taught his disciples this prayer when they asked him how to pray.

Analysing The Lord’s Prayer, Gerhard Ebeling says that " Abba father", the words Jesus used to call on God, signify "My father" or "our father", which is an invocation we can use when all words fail, when we become speechless. We can approach God in the familiar confident way a child approaches a loving parent.

God the Father: Encyclopedia - Osiris

Osiris (Greek language, also Usiris; the Egyptian language name is variously transliterated Asar, Aser, Ausar, or Ausare) is the Egyptian God of death and the underworld. The origin of Osiris' name is a mystery, which formes an obstacle to knowing the pronunciation of its hieroglyphic form. The majority of current thinking is that the Egyptian name is pronounced aser where the a is the letter ayin (i.e. a short 'a' pronounced from the back of the throat as if swallowing).< ...

God the Father: Encyclopedia - God and gender

This entry discusses how the Abrahamic faiths of Judaism, Christianity and Islam deal with God and gender. It includes both traditional religious views, and modern views of these faiths, especially as to how modern feminism has influenced the theology of these religions. For the discussion of the topic in Hinduism, see Hindu views on God and gender. Monotheists hold a belief in one God as a fundamental religious principle. God the Father: Encyclopedia - Jehovah

Jehovah (also sometimes spelled Yehovah) is the name of the God of the Old Testament as commonly transliterated in English from the Masoretic Hebrew text. Etymologically, it is a third person singular, imperfect, probably the causative form of the verb hawah (or hayah), signifying "to be." The word Jehovah consists of the consonants JHVH or JHWH (more accurately YHWH or YHVH), with the vowels of a separate word, Adonai (Lord). What its original vowels were is a matter of speculation, as an interpretation of such texts as Exodus ...

God the Father: Encyclopedia - Goddess worship

Goddess worship is a general description for the veneration of a female Goddess or goddesses. Many New Age Goddess devotees prefer the term goddess spirituality, avoiding the term "worship" for a faith that does not distance the Divine into a remote, hierarchical separation. Goddess veneration may be also used instead of "worship", as it can imply respect and intimacy without undue deference. In such contexts, "spirituality" is often preferred to "religion" because major organised religions have not typically nurtured go ...

God the Father: Encyclopedia - Mother goddess

A mother goddess is a goddess portrayed as the Earth Mother who serves as a general fertility deity, the bountiful embodiment of the earth. From the elegant snake-offering goddess figures of Knossos to the rock-cut images of Cybele, to Dione ("the Goddess") who was invoked at Dodona, along with Zeus, until late Classical times, it is sometimes too facile to class all archaic female goddesses as manifestations of the mother goddess. Archaeologists tend to avoid such theories in interpreting sites and material remains and sometim ...

God the Father: Encyclopedia - Patripassianism

In Christianity, Patripassianism is the belief that God the Father and Son are simply different aspects of God. The implication of this belief is that God the Father suffered on the cross. God the Father: Encyclopedia - Monarchianism

Monarchianism, or Monarchism as it is sometimes called, is a set of beliefs that emphasize God as being one, that God is the single and only ruler. This emphasis conflicted with the doctrine of the Trinity, of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Models of resolving the tension between the two principles in favour of God's oneness were proposed in the 2nd century, but rejected as heretical by the Church. Monarchianism in-and-of itself is not a complete theory of the relation of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bu ...

God the Father: Encyclopedia - Consubstantial

Consubstantial is a term used in orthodox Christian theology. Derived from Greek, it describes the relationship between the three Divine Persons of the Christian Trinity and conotes that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are "of the same substance" (or "of one essence" or "of one Being") in that the Son is "generated" ("born" or "begotten") "before all ages" or "eternally" of the Father's own Be

God the Father: Encyclopedia - Personal God

The phrase personal God is religious term used far more often by laypeople than by theologians due to its numerous connotations. Personal God - Definitions. The broadest definition of this term is a God who is a personal being, i.e. a being with a personality, including the capacity to reason and feel love. In the case of the Christian belief in the Trinity, God is a personal being in manifested in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This view is intended to challenge the concep ...
