GM LS engine: Encyclopedia II - Cadillac V8 engine - World's Largest

Although the modernized engine was compact and light for its displacement and output, 429 cu. in. represented the limit of the original architecture's expansion, and it had been surpassed by Chrysler's 440 and Lincoln's 462. As a result Cadillac introduced an all-new engine for 1968. Cadillac V8 engine - 472. At introduction, the new engine had a 4.30 in (109.2 mm) bore and a 4.06 in (103.1 mm) stroke for a displacement of 472 cu. in. (7.7 L). It delivered 375 hp (280 kW) @ 4400 rpm, and a massiv ...

GM LS engine: Encyclopedia II - Chevrolet Small-Block engine - 350

The first generation of Chevrolet small-blocks began with the 1955 Chevrolet 265 in³ (4.3 L) V8. But it was the 350 in³ (5.7L) series that set the standard for high performance. The engine's physical dimensions (oversquare 4.00 in bore and 3.48 in stroke, 102 mm by 88 mm) are nearly identical to the 400 hp (300 kW) LS2 engine of today, but of course much has changed. It is by far the most widely used Chevrolet small-block; from the factory, it was installed in everything ...

GM LS engine: Encyclopedia II - Cadillac V8 engine - Aluminum OHV

Cadillac V8 engine - HT-4100. A new engine was introduced for 1982, the HT-4100 (option code LT8). This engine, designed for transverse, front wheel drive applications, originally was slated for 1983 and a new line of 'downsized' Cadillac sedans. With the failure of the V8-6-4, however, and delays in the downsizing program (shared with Buick and Oldsmobile) that ultimately delayed those cars until 1986, the new V8 ...

Chevrolet Small-Block engine - Generation 1. The original design of the small block is broken into two distinct families: the first design in 1955 whose family is known as SB1 and a redesign in 1996 known as the SB2. GM LS engine: Encyclopedia II - Chevrolet Small-Block engine - Introduction

Chevrolet's small-block V8 is one of the most famous automobile engines in history. Nicknamed "mouse motor" for its compact dimensions compared to other V8 engines of the time, production began in 1955 with the 265 in³ (4.3 L) engine used to bring performance credentials to the Corvette. The displacement changed over the years, eventually reaching 400 in³ (6.6 L), but none caught on like the 350 in³ (5.7 L) small-block. This engine is still in production today at General Motors Toluca Mexico plant, but is no longer offered in current model year vehicles since the year 2000. Its product ...

GM LS engine: Encyclopedia II - GM LS engine - Generation III

The Generation III small-blocks replaced the LT family in 1997. These shared the same rough displacement and bore spacing (4.4 in) as their cast iron predecessors but almost everything else was changed. The bore was reduced to 3.9 in and the stroke longer at 3.62 in for greater torque. The block was cast from aluminum (for cars) instead of iron and had a new intake and injection technology and coil-on-plug ignition. The traditional five-bolt pentagonal cylinder head pattern was replaced with a square four-bolt design, and the pistons are flat instead of domed. Even the cylinder firing order was changed.See also:
