Global warming: Encyclopedia - Global warming

Global warming is an increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans. The term is also used for the scientific theory of anthropogenic global warming, which attributes much of the recent observed and projected global warming to a human-induced intensification of the greenhouse effect. On this theory, the increased volumes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released mainly by the burning of fossil fuels, and, to a lesser extent, land clearing and agriculture, are the primary sources of warming. ...

Global warming: Encyclopedia II - Global warming - Causes of global warming
The climate system varies both through natural, "internal" processes as well as in response to variations in external "forcing" from both human and non-human causes, including changes in the Earth's orbit around the Sun (Milankovitch cycles), solar activity, and volcanic emissions as well as greenhouse gases. (See Climate change for further discussion of these forcing processes.) Climatologists accept that the earth has warmed recently. The cause or cause ...

Climatologists accept that the earth has warmed recently but the cause or causes of this change is somewhat more controversial, especially outside the scientific community. Atmospheric scientists know that adding carbon dioxide ( ...

Global warming: Encyclopedia II - Solar variation - Global warming

Some researchers have correlated solar variation with changes in the Earth's average temperature and climate - sometimes finding an effect, and sometimes not. When effects are found they have tended to be greater than can be explained by direct response to the change in radiative forcing from solar change, so feedback or amplification mechanisms are required.[13] For a discussion of attribution of causes of current global warmin ...

Global warming: Encyclopedia II - Global warming - Effects

The predicted effects of global warming are many and various, both for the environment and for human life. The primary effect of global warming is increasing carbon dioxide and increasing global average surface temperature. From this flow a variety of secondary effects, including sea level rise, impacts on agriculture, reductions in the ozone layer (see above), increased intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, and the spread of disease. In some cases, the effects may already be being experienced, although it is impossible to attri ...

Global warming: : Earth Changes - Will there be dramatic Geological and Political changes the coming years until 2012?

There is a lot of information found both in prophecies and in recent writings and articles talking about Earth Changes, usually defined as catastrophic geological events such as earthquakes, volcanoes, polar shifts, flooding, and global warming. Many point to the shifting times and the moving into the Golden Age and to 2012 being a turning point in the history of mankind. The research and sometimes channeled material presented, probably with the best of intentions, often still carries elements of our own subconscious fears but is it only fear based material or is there something to this predictions of Earth Changes?

Global warming: Encyclopedia - Climate engineering

This article is in need of attention. You can help Wikipedia by editing it into a better article. Please also consider changing this notice to be more specific. Climate engineering is a term coined by the Global Commons Institute (GCI) to mean the efforts of human intervention to counteract the effects of modern industrialization on the global climate as well as engineer new methods to better suit the environment and its inhabitants. Two examples of proposals to modify the climate plan ...

Global warming: Encyclopedia - Business action on climate change

Business action on climate change includes a range of activities relating to combatting global warming, and to influencing political decisions on global-warming-related regulation, such as the Kyoto Protocol. Major corporations have played and to some extent continue to play a significant role in the politics of global warming, especially in the United States, through lobbying of government and funding of global warming skeptics. Business also plays a key role in the mitigation of global warming, through decisions to invest in researc ...

Global warming: Encyclopedia - Attribution of recent climate change

Attribution of recent climate change attempts to discover what mechanisms are responsible for the observed changes in climate. The endeavour centers on the observed changes over the last century and in particular over the last 50 years, when observations are best and human influence greatest. Over the past 150 years human activities have released increasing quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere that theory and climate models say should lead to increases in temperature - colloquially known as global warming. Other human effects are relevant—for example, sulph ...

Global warming: Encyclopedia - Urban heat island

An urban heat island (UHI) is a metropolitan area which is significantly warmer than its surroundings. As population centers grow in size from village to town to city, they tend to have a corresponding increase in average temperature which is more often welcome in winter months than in summertime. The EPA says: "On hot summer days, urban air can be 2-10°F [2-6°C] hotter than the surrounding countryside." Not to be confused with global warming, scientists ...

Global warming: Encyclopedia - Carbon emissions trading

Carbon emissions trading involves the trading of permits to emit carbon dioxide (and other greenhouse gases, calculated in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, tCO2e). It is one of the ways countries can meet their obligations under the Kyoto Protocol to reduce emissions and thereby mitigate global warming. 107 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) have been exchanged through projects in 2004, a 38% increase relative to 2003 (78 mtCO2e).[1] Carbon emissions tra ...

Global warming: Oceanography Dictionary - global warming

Definition and meaning of global warming:

global warming - the gradual increase in global temperatures caused by the emission of gases that trap the sun's heat in the Earth's atmosphere (greenhouse effect). Gases that contribute to global warming include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxides, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and halocarbons (the replacements for CFCs). The carbon dioxide emissions are primarily caused by the use of fossil fuels for energy

Global warming: Encyclopedia II - Effects of global warming - Effects of Global Warming

Effects of global warming - Weather. Increasing temperature is likely to lead to increasing precipitation [3] but the effects on storms are less clear. Extratropical storms partly depend on the temperature gradient, which is predicted to weaken in the northern hemisphere as the polar region warms more than the rest of the hemisphere [4]. Wind produced from differences in barometic pressure may increase as radiative forcing inc ...

Global warming and agriculture - Assessment: global vs local. Despite technological advances, such as improved varieties, genetically modified organisms, and irrigation systems, weather is still a key factor in agricultural productivity, as well as soil properties and natural communities. The effect of climate on agriculture is related to variabilities in local climates rather than in global climate patterns. Consequently, agronomists consider an ...

In the long run, the climatic change could affect agriculture in several ways : productivity, in terms of quantity and quality of crops agricultural practices, through changes of water use (irrigation) and agricultural inputs such as herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers environmental effects, in particular in relation of frequency and intensity of soil drainage (leading to nitrogen leaching), soil erosion, reduction of crop diversity rural space, through the loss of previously cultivated lands, land s ...

Global warming: Encyclopedia II - Mitigation of global warming - Mitigating the effects of global warming

Mitigation of the effects of global warming (often referred to as "adaptation" in climate change circles) focusses on defending against rising sea levels through better flood defences and by changing patterns of land use (avoiding more vulnerable areas for housing). It also involves adapting urban areas to increasingly severe storms by increasing rainwater storage (domestic water butts, unpaved gardens etc) and increasing the capacity of stormwater systems (and also separating ...

Global warming: Encyclopedia II - Global warming and agriculture - Consequences of potential global climate changes on agricultural production

Many scientists hold the position that agricultural shifts are likely. The possible effects proposed are listed below: The first direct effect is the composition of the earth atmosphere, such the amount of carbon dioxide and ozone. Gases such as methane, nitrogen dioxide and chloroflourocarbon however, are commonly believed not to have any effect on physiological processes. Some indirect effects are climate parameters resulting from climate change, such as temperature, insolation, rainfall, and humidity. Other indirect effects include ...
