Glenn Ford: Encyclopedia II - Eleanor Powell - Biography

Eleanor Torrey Powell was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. A dancer since childhood, she was discovered at the age of 11 by the head of the Vaudeville Kiddie revue, Gus Edwards. When she was 17, she brought her graceful, athletic style to Broadway, where she starred in various revues and musicals. During this time, she was dubbed "the world's greatest tap dancer" due to her machine-gun footwork, and in the early 1930s appeared as a background performer in a couple of early, inconsequential musical films. Glenn Ford: Encyclopedia II - The Big Heat - Critical reaction

Critical reaction to the film was positive when it was released, and today The Big Heat is considered a classic. Film critic Roger Ebert lists the film in his 100 Greats Films. In Ebert's review he praises the films supporting actors and questions the actions of the apparently strait-laced Bannion: "Does it ever occur to him that he is at least partly responsible for their deaths? No, apparently it doesn't, and that's one reason the film is so insidiously chilling; he co ...

Glenn Ford: Encyclopedia II - Once Upon a Time in the West - External References

Leone's intent was, in essence, to take the stock conventions of the American Westerns of John Ford, Howard Hawks, and others, and rework them in an ironic fashion, essentially reversing their intended meaning in their original sources into a darker connotation. The most obvious is the casting of veteran movie good guy Henry Fonda as the villainous Frank (and the brief appearance of Monument Valley), but there are also many other, more subtle such reversals throughout the film. According to film critic and historian Christopher Fra ...
