Get Back: Encyclopedia II - Get Back - The writing process

The life of "Get Back" began during the rehearsal sessions on the sound stage at Twickenham Studios in early January 1969, when McCartney lifted "Get back to where you should be" from fellow Beatle George Harrison's "Sour Milk Sea" (the song was later given to Jackie Lomax to record), and turned it into "Get back to where you once belonged". Later, on the press release to promote the "Get Back" single, McCartney would write, "We were sitting in the studio and we made it up out of thin air... we started to write words there and then...when we finished it, we recorded it at Apple Stud ...

Get Back: Encyclopedia II - Phil Spector - The Wall of Sound

Spector's trademark during that era was the so-called Wall of Sound, a production technique yielding a dense, layered effect that was very effective and dramatic, and carried especially well on AM radio and jukeboxes. To attain this signature sound, Spector gathered large groups of musicians (playing some instruments not generally used for ensemble playing, such as electric and acoustic guitars) playing orchestrated parts — often using many instruments playing in unison — for a fuller sound. Dozens of musicians and instruments would be jammed into Spector's tiny Gold Star studio, with the sound ...

Get Back: Encyclopedia II - Across the Universe - Recording

The song was initially rejected by the three other Beatles when Lennon brought it to the studio. Written during the group's so-called "Peppertime" period of psychedelic-fueled experimentation, the song did initially not match the frames of mind the others shared. One day, after bandmates George Harrison and Ringo Starr had left, Paul McCartney asked to hear Lennon's piece again. They played it and decided to do a recording. They brought in several Apple Scruffs (female Beatle fans hanging around outside the studio) to provide background voca ...

The album, originally titled Get Back, was planned to be the Beatles coming full circle. After increasing use of overdubs and multi-layered recordings on recent albums, the group wanted to record the new album live in the studio, just as they had done for their first few albums in the early 1960s. In keeping with the concept, the cover artwork was going to be an update of the cover of their first album, Please Please Me, with the band looking down the stairwell of EMI's headquarters office block in Manchester Square, London. The photograph was however later used on the compilation album < ...
