In Greek mythology, Geryon (Geryones,Geyron), son of Chrysaor and Callirhoe, was a winged giant made from three entire human bodies conjoined at the waist. Geryon lived on the island of Erytheia, in the far west of the Mediterranean. He owned a two-headed hound, named Orthrus, which was the brother of Cerberus, and a herd of cattle that were guarded by Orthrus, and a man named Eurythion. Geryon: Encyclopedia II - Geryon - Origin
When the sun reaches the constellation of Gemini, it meets the constellation of Auriga. Many ancient beliefs associated the daily path of the sun across the sky with the sun god using a fiery chariot, and so, here, the sun's yearly path (its transit) obtains the fiery chariot (Auriga) of the sun's daily path. Later Greek mythology considered the sun to use a cup to traverse the sky. Also in this region of the sky is a vast space without easily visible stars (now occupied by the modern constellations of Lynx, and by Camelopardalis), wh ...

Geryon: Encyclopedia II - Geryon - Theft of the Cattle of Geryon

Herakles tried to steal the cattle, and killed first Orthrus, then Eurythion. When Geryon arrived, in some versions having been alerted by Menoetius, Hades' shepherd, Herakles slew him, tearing his body into its three pieces. Heracles then had to herd the cattle back to Eurystheus. In Roman versions of the narrative, on the Aventine hill in Italy, Cacus stole some of the cattle stolen from Geryon as Heracles slept, making the cattle walk backwards so that they left no trail, a repetition of the trick of the young Hermes. According to ...

In Greek mythology, Orthrus (also called Orthros, Orthos, Orthus, Orth and Orphus) was a two-headed dog and the brother of Cerberus. He was owned by the winged titan, Geryon. Orthrus and his master, Eurytion, were charged with guarding Geryon's herd of red cattle. Heracles eventually killed Orthrus, Eurytion, and Geryon, before taking the red cattle to complete his tenth labor. Orthrus was the son of Echidne and Typhon. In Roman mythology, Caca was the sister of the fire-breathing giant Cacus. She was originally a goddess of the hearth, but was later demoted to a minor part in one version of Hercules' Twelve Labors. She, out of sympathy, told Hercules where the cattle of Geryon were after her brother stole them, and hid them in his cave. Hercules then killed Cacus. Vesta took Caca's role as goddess of the hearth. Other related archivesCacus, Geryon, Hercules, Roman mythology, Vesta

Geryon: Encyclopedia - Cacus

In Greek mythology, Cacus was a fire-breathing monster and the son of Vulcan. He lived in a cave in the Aventine Hill in Italy, the future site of Rome. To the horror of nearby inhabitants, Cacus lived on human flesh and would nail the heads of victims to the doors of his cave. He was eventually overcome by Heracles. According to Evander, Heracles stopped to pasture the cattle he had stolen from Geryon near Cacus' lair. As Heracles slept, the monster took a liking to the cattle and slyly stole eight of them - four bulls and fou ...

Geryon: Encyclopedia - Hesperides

In Greek mythology, the Hesperides are nymphs who tend a blissful garden in a far west corner of the world, located, according to various sources, in the Arcadian Mountains in Greece, near the Atlas mountains in Libya, or on a distant island at the edge of the ocean. According to the Greek poet Stesichorus, in his poem the "song of Geryon", and the Greek geographer Strabo, in his book Geographika (volume III), the Hesperides are in Tartessos, a location placed to the south of Iberia (Spain). The Greek poet Hesiod said that the ...

Geryon: Encyclopedia II - Camelopardalis - Mythology

Camelopardalis has no mythology associated with its stars, as it is a modern constellation, first recorded by Jakob Bartsch. The faintness of the constellation, and that of the nearby constellation Lynx, lead to the early Greeks considering this area of the sky to be empty, and thus a desert. However, as a desert, together with other features in the Zodiac sign of Gemini (i.e. the Milky Way, and the constellations Gemini, Orion, Auriga, and Canis Major), this may be the origin of the myth of the cattle of Geryon, which ...

Geryon: Encyclopedia II - Hercules - Origin of the legend

The cult of Hercules may have been the first foreign one to be adopted in Rome; his most important shrine, the Ara Maxima, was in the original Palatine settlement. He became popular with merchants, who customarily paid him a tithe of their profits. Hercules is said to have founded an altar where the Forum Boarium, the cattle market, was later held. One possible origin for the myth of the Cattle of Geryon, one of The Twelve Labours of Herakles, has been attributed to an older Milky Way myth which associates the Milky Way constellation with a herd of dairy ...

Geryon: Encyclopedia - Helios

In earlier Greek mythology, the sun was personified as a deity called Hêlios (Greek for "the sun"), whom Homer equates with the sun titan Hyperion. Other sources say Helios is Hyperion's son by his sister Theia. Helios was seen driving a fiery chariot across the sky. He has two sisters, the moon goddess Selene and the dawn goddess Eos. Many think that Apollo becomes the Olympian "sun god", but this idea is mostly based on speculation and assumption. The equivalent of Helios in Roman mythology is Sol. Helios - Gre ...
