Four ships of the United States Navy have been named USS George Washington in honor of an early American General and first President of the United States. The first George Washington was purchased on 12 October 1798 and served for less than four years. She was sold in May 1802. The second George Washington was a German ocean liner, launched in 1908. She was taken over and converted into a transport by the Navy during World War I. She was sold for scrap in 1951.

George Washington: How to Receive Creative Inspiration at Will

The famous American scientist of the early twentieth century, George Washington Carver, was trying to make sandpaper, but he wasn't having much success.

 

Carver fell asleep and dreamed that he was in a wagon shop, where a man was working silently on a wheel. Carver asked the wheelwright if he knew how to make sandpaper. The workman said, ÒYes,Ó then continued working in silence.

 

Carver said with enthusiasm, ÒThis is how I would do it,Ó and described the sandpaper-making process he'd been using. ÒYou did all right,Ó the workman said. ÒBut you need to boil the sand.Ó Carver woke up and immediately went to his laboratory and boiled the sand. His sandpaper was perfect.
