Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy TV series - Development and Production

After the success of the first seven episodes of the radio series, all broadcast in 1978, negotiations for a TV pilot programme began at the same time the final five episodes of the second radio series were commissioned, in May 1979. A fully-animated version was briefly discussed in the autumn of 1978 (according to M. J. Simpson's book Hitchhiker), but it was eventually decided to make most of the series feature "live action" and only animate The Guide's entries. The script for the pilot was delivered in December 1979, and term ...

Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series - Music used in the series

One of Adams' stated goals was to be experimental in the use of sound, thus the use of stereo sound (which he later said that before Hitchhiker's it was deemed impossible and after Hitchhiker's it was made compulsory in radio comedy). Being a fan of Pink Floyd and the Beatles (and especially the experimental albums both bands produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s) Adams also wanted to incorporate other bits of music from a variety of artists. This was only achieved during the first series. There were, naturally, some problems with copyr ...

Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - Alternative comedy - Transition to mainstream

Spurred on by the actions of up coming television producers, such as Paul Jackson, Geoffrey Perkins and Jimmy Mulville (see also Hat Trick Productions), alternative comedy spilled onto TV in the 80s. It was supported by minority channel BBC 2 in the form of The Young Ones and other sitcoms. These were seen as cult programmes, although there was some mainstream success for shows like Not The Nine O'Clock News and French & Sau ...

Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series - The Primary and Secondary Phases

Main article: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Primary and Secondary Phases The first radio series (first six episodes) were broadcast in March and April, 1978. A seventh episode was broadcast on 24 December 1978. This seventh episode was commonly known as the Christmas Episode. This had nothing to do with Christmas except in an early draft (which would have had Marvin the Paranoid Android revealed as the "star" followed by the Three Wise Men); it was called the Christmas Episode because it was first broadcast on Chris ...

Disclaimer on spelling: Unfortunately, the different editions of the Hitchhiker's Guide spell it differently -- thus "Hitch-Hiker's Guide", "Hitch Hiker's Guide" and "Hitchhiker's Guide" are used in different editions (US or UK), versions (audio or text) and compilations of the book. Some editions even used different spellings on the spine and title page. For the sake of coherence, this article spells it Hitchhiker's Guide, which is reportedly the way author Adams himself preferred it See also:

Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - Alternative comedy - Criticism

Many people are critical of alternative comedy and there is a strong generational divide between those who like and dislike it. Older people in particular find the swearing and no-holds-barred nature of alternative comedy to be offensive. In the early days of alternative comedy, a frequent criticism was that nobody found a person standing on a stage simply discussing events in his or her life particularly funny. There was a joke said at the time: "I'm an alternati ...

Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - Alternative comedy - Modern alternative comedy

It's debatable whether alternative comedy still exists. Comedians have always been averse to describing themselves as alternative, even during the era's hay day. Comedians like Mark Thomas, Mark Steel and Jeremy Hardy still perform stand-up with a hard political and intellectual edge but their isolation makes them conspicuous, and they're far from being household names. Few of the original alternative comedians appear on stage any longer, least of all performing stand-up comedy. Ben Elton, arguably the epitome of an alternative comedy for much of the 1980s, now considers him ...

Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - Douglas Adams - Dirk Gently

In between Adams's first trip to Madagascar with Mark Carwardine in 1985, and their series of travels that formed the basis for the radio series and non-fiction book Last Chance to See, Adams wrote two other novels with a new cast of characters. Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency was first published in 1987, and was described by its author as "a kind of ghost-horror-detective-time-travel-romantic-comedy-epic, mainly concerned with mud, music and quantum mechanics." Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - TV series

Main article: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (TV series) The popularity of the radio series gave rise to a six-episode television series, directed and produced by Alan Bell, which first aired on BBC Two in January and February of 1981. It employed many of the actors from the radio series and was based mainly on the radio versions of Fits the First through Sixth. A second series was at one point planned, with a storyline, according to Alan Bell and Mark Wing-Davey, that would have come from Adams's abandoned Doctor Who ...

Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Origin of The Guide

The first radio series comes from a proposal called 'The Ends of the Earth': six self-contained episodes, all ending with the Earth being destroyed in a different way. While writing the first episode, Adams realised that he needed someone on the planet who was an alien to provide some context, and that this alien needed a reason to be there. Adams finally settled on making the alien a roving researcher for a "wholly remarkable book" named The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. As the first radio episode's writing progressed, the Guide became the centre of his story, and he decided ...
