 | | | Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - The Hunting of the Snark - InterpretationsVarious theories have tried to elucidate the text or parts thereof.
The Hunting of the Snark - Lewis Carroll is the Baker.
This is by far the most serious of them all. The text has a number of hints at this fact. The fact that his name is unknown to the other crew members (he forgets it) attests that some riddle is involved. The baker's character as described in Fit the First matches other descriptions of Carroll of himself (e.g. the White Knight in Through the Looking-Glass). Lewis Carrol wa ...

 | | | Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Tertiary to Quintessential Phases - The Tertiary PhaseThe third 6-part radio series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Tertiary Phase, based on Life, the Universe and Everything, ran on BBC Radio 4 from Tuesday September 21 to October 26, 2004, with repeats on the following Thursdays. (Arthur Dent, of course, could never get the hang of Thursdays.) Episodes were subtitled Fits the Thirteenth through Eighteenth. The third novel was adapted by Dirk Maggs following instructions left by Adams. Most of the original radio series cast returned, with the exception ...

 | | | Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - Spitting Image - IntroductionThe name comes from British slang, an apparent misunderstanding of the established term "spit and image;" a person who closely resembles another person can be described as their "spitting image". Furthermore, in the early 1980s in Britain spitting was still perceived by the public as an inextricable component of the punk phenomenon.
The puppets, caricaturing public figures, were designed by the cartoonists Peter Fluck and Roger Law (who sometimes spoonerized their names as 'Luck and Flaw'). They were assisted by various young caricatu ...

 | | | Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series - Early DevelopmentDouglas Adams had contributed comedy sketches for BBC radio programmes produced by Simon Brett (including The Burkiss Way and Week Ending, among others). The two of them came up with an idea for a radio science-fiction comedy series in early 1977.
Originally to be called The Ends of the Earth, each episode would have ended with the planet Earth meeting its demise in a different way. While writing the first episode, Douglas said that he needed a character who knew what was going to happen and provide a point of vie ...

 | | | Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - BooksThe books are described as "a trilogy in five parts", having been described as a trilogy on the release of the third book, and then a "trilogy in four parts" on the release of the fourth book. Some versions of the fifth book also have the words "The fifth part of the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker Trilogy" on the cover. The plots of the television and radio series are more or less the same as that of the first two novels, though some of the events occur in a different order and many of the details are changed. Much of parts five ...

 | | | Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - Alternative comedy - DefinitionAlternative comedy relied not on punchline-based jokes, like traditional comedians. Instead a typical alternative comedian might rely on one, all or a selection of the following:
Observational humour: Making humour out of everday occurrences, and also laughing at one's own foibles and weakenesses (traditional comedians laughed at other people, such as ethnic minorities or "the mother-in-law", while alternative comedians laughed at themselves, their situation, and at the human condition).
Political satire: ...

 | | | Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - Douglas Adams - Education and early worksAdams first attended Primrose Hill Primary School in Brentwood, Essex. He took the exams and interviewed for Brentwood School at age six, and attended from 1959 to 1970. Adams attended different divisions of the school, including the Prep School and the Middle School. While at the prep school, he had an English class, taught by Frank Halford, where Halford awarded Adams the only ten out of ten of his entire teaching career for a creative writing exercise. Adams remembered this for the rest of his life, especially when facing writer's block. ...

 | | | Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - Douglas Adams - Early lifeDouglas Adams was born to Janet (Donovan) Adams (now Janet Thrift) and Christopher Douglas Adams in Cambridge, England. His parents had one other child together: Susan who was born in March 1955. His parents separated and divorced in 1957, and Douglas, Susan and Janet moved in with Janet's parents, the Donovans, in Brentwood, Essex. Douglas's grandmother kept her house as an official RSPCA refuge for hurt animals, which "exacerbated young Douglas's hayfever and asthma." | | | Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Tertiary to Quintessential Phases - The fourth and fifth radio seriesA fourth and fifth series based on So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish and Mostly Harmless respectively follow. The names for these series were apparently chosen to be more humorous than the standard terms quaternary and quinary, which are rarely used anyway.
While these were treated as the fourth and fifth Hitchhiker's Guide radio series, they were broadcast in one eight-week stretch from May through June 2005, to stop people (in the words of Dirk Maggs) from "nodding off in between." The tradition of "Fits" continues; these were kn ...

 | | | Geoffrey Perkins: Encyclopedia II - Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the GalaxyThe Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a concept for a science-fiction comedy radio series pitched by Adams and radio producer Simon Brett to BBC Radio 4 in 1977. Adams came up with an outline for a pilot episode, as well as a few other stories (reprinted in Neil Gaiman's book Don't Panic: The Official Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Companion) that could potentially be used in the series.
According to Adams, the idea for the title The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy occurred to him while he lay drunk in a fiel ...
