Gazing: Encyclopedia - Medusa

In Greek mythology, Medusa (Greek: Μέδουσα), was a monstrous female character whose gaze could turn people to stone. Some classical references describe her as one of three Gorgon sisters. Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale were monsters with brass hands, sharp fangs and hair of living, venomous serpents. The Gorgons and their other sisters the Graeae (and possibly the Hesperides) were daughters of Phorcys and Ceto. In the most well known version of the myth, Medusa originally started out as a beautiful human. She ...

Gazing: Encyclopedia - Afterimage

An afterimage is an optical illusion that occurs after looking away from a direct gaze at an image. This is closely related to the phenomenon called the persistence of vision, which is used in animation and cinema. One of the most common afterimages is the bright glow that seems to float before one's eyes after staring at a light bulb or a headlight for a few seconds. Afterimages are caused when the eye's photoreceptors, primarily those known as cone cells, "tire" from the over stimulation and lose sensitivity. Normally the eye ...

Gazing: Encyclopedia - Colossi of Memnon

The Colossi of Memnon (known to locals as el-Colossat, or es-Salamat) are two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. For the past 3400 years they have stood in the Theban necropolis, across the River Nile from the modern city of Luxor. The twin statues depict Amenhotep III (fl. 14th century BC) in a seated position. his hands resting on his knees and his gaze turned eastward toward the river and the rising sun. Two shorter figures are carved into the front throne alongside his legs: these are his wife Tiy and mo ...

Annie Jump Cannon (December 11, 1863 – April 13, 1941) was a US astronomer whose cataloguing work was instrumental in the development of contemporary stellar classification. She was born to shipbuilder and state senator Wilson Lee Cannon, and his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Jump, in Dover, Delaware. Mary gave birth to two more daughters after Annie, in addition to the four step-children she inherited in the marriage. Gazing: Encyclopedia II - Skygazing - Binocular gazing

Binoculars are very useful when you wish to observe bright, large astronomical objects. Thanks to them it is possible to see lunar craters. In spite of the distance between us and the Moon, one can observe the relief of these craters along the terminator, the separation line between the illuminated and darkened parts of the Moon. Lunar features are emphasized in this zone where sunlight strikes at a low angle and casts long shadows. This spectacle ...

Gazing: Encyclopedia II - Shoegazing - Nu-gazing and current trends

After the initial first wave of bands whose careers petered out in the early 1990s, or moved in different directions, a number of bands such as Bethany Curve and Brian Jonestown Massacre were able to take inspiration from these groups and pursue new audiences. In recent years the NME has recently pointed out the shoegazing influence in a number of up and coming bands, which it has called "nu-gazing". Bands of this nature include Televise, Air Formation, Scarling., Autolux, Amusement Parks on Fire, Joy Zipper, M83, Los Sonidos Distantes,Ulric ...

Gazing: Encyclopedia II - Eye contact - The role of eye contact in facilitating the expression of emotions

Eye contact and facial expressions provide key social and emotional information; we continually probe each other's eyes and faces for positive or negative mood signs. The eyes have often been described as the "windows of the soul", and in some contexts, gazing at another's eyes may arouse strong emotions. Eye contact - Love and attraction. Lovers often gaze into each other's eyes for extended periods of time to show and [nonverbal communication] exp ...

Gazing: Encyclopedia II - Eye contact - Instinctive behavior

As with primates, human beings show an extreme alertness to where others are looking. Although a person may consciously control where his or her own eyes hover and land, he or she may feel compelled to look at objects and body parts which he or she finds interesting (e.g., faces, breasts, hands, and trees) -- or to gaze away from what he or she finds distasteful. In response to feelings of shyness, submissiveness, and stranger anxiety, we subconsciously "watch where we look". In crowded elevators, people generally avoid allowing their eyes to roam freely across others' faces as they do w ...

Gazing: Encyclopedia II - Skygazing - The observation with a reflecting telescope

A reflecting telescope is constituted not of lenses but of mirrors. It being less costly to manufacture, one can, for the price of a refracting telescope, acquire an instrument of the more important diameter that gives access to the deep space. Nevertheless, to take advantage of the power of a reflecting telescope, it is necessary to have a good site of observation safe from the lights of the city, otherwise the usage of a good telescope is preferable. With a 150mm lensed reflecting telescope, the viewer is able to distinguish the spi ...

Gazing: Encyclopedia II - Skygazing - Observations with a refracting telescope

A refracting telescope is an instrument that is constituted of one or several lenses and that focuses the luminous rays toward one point called focus. The role of the eyepiece situated after the focus is to shape the picture so that it is visible for the eyes as well as to enlarge this one. A good refracting telescope is an instrument that one retains all his or her life, even after the acquisition of a bigger telescope. The refracting telescope, by its reduced opening (therefore little luminous), is especially adapted to the observat ...

Gazing: Encyclopedia II - Shoegazing - The Scene That Celebrates Itself

The first stirrings of recognition came when indie writer Steve Lamacq referred to Ride in a review for the NME as "The House of Love with chainsaws". In the United States of America the music is sometimes now referred to as "dream pop". The genre label was quite often misapplied. Key bands such as Ride, Chapterhouse and Slowdive emerged from the Thames Valley and as such Swervedriver found themselves labelled 'shoegazers' on account of their own (coincidental) Thames Valley origins - despite their more pronounced Hüsker Dü s ...

Gazing: Encyclopedia II - Shoegazing - Technical Definitions

Shoegazing is characterised by the use of distortion and the fuzzbox, droning riffs and a Phil Spector-esque wall of sound from the noisy guitars. Another way to describe the guitar effects would be "lead-guitarlessness", typically with two distorted rhythm guitars interweaving together and giving an exceptionally muddied sound. Although lead guitar riffs were often present, they were not the central focus of most shoegazing songs. Vocals typically are subdued in volume and tone, but underneath the layers of guitars is often a strong ...

Gazing: Encyclopedia II - Shoegazing - Influences

The Velvet Underground was often cited as a major influence, as the band had been on the C86 movement before it. Many of the bands eschewed the punk era altogether, although punk-era bands such as The Cramps, Pere Ubu and The Birthday Party proved influential in some cases, especially with the forerunners of the genre. However, in the main, artists such as The Jesus & Mary Chain and especially the Cocteau Twins and Spacemen 3 (and later Spiritualized) gave birth to the genre directl ...
