The U.S. presidential election of 2000 was one of the closest elections in U.S. history, decided by only 527 votes in the swing state of Florida. It would turn out to be a month before the election was finally certified after numerous court challenges and recounts. Republican candidate George W. Bush won Florida's 25 electoral votes by a razor-thin margin of the popular ...

Gary Bauer: Encyclopedia II - U.S. presidential election 2000 - Florida election results

On election night, it quickly became clear that Florida would be a contentious state. The national television networks, through information provided them by the Voter News Service, first called Florida for Gore in the hour after polls closed in the eastern peninsula but before they closed in the heavily Republican counties of the western panhandle. (The peninsula is on Eastern Time and the panhandle is on Central Time.) Hours later, after the polls had closed in the panhandle, the networks retracted their call for Gore (leading to questions ...

Gary Bauer: Encyclopedia II - Factions in the Republican Party United States - Religious Right

The term "religious right" is often used synonymously with Christian right because most of its members are fundamentalist Protestants. Some observers consider Mormons, traditionalist Catholics and Orthodox Jews to belong to this category. The Religious Right has become a powerful force within the GOP. This faction is socially conservative, believes that values of faith are vital to society, and should not be separated from governance or education. Though what constitutes moral values is a matter of dispute between different (sometimes even s ...

The PNAC website [2] states the group's "fundamental propositions", which are "American leadership is good both for America and for the world" "such leadership requires military strength, diplomatic energy and commitment to moral principle" "too few political leaders today are making the case for global leadership." The PNAC also made a statement of principles at their 1997 inception. As the 20th century draws to a close, the United States stands as the world's pre-eminent power. H ...

Gary Bauer: Encyclopedia II - Alan Keyes - U.S. Senate campaign in Illinois

On August 1, 2004, the Illinois Republican Party under the leadership of Judy Baar Topinka notified Keyes of the party's interest in his candidacy for the United States Senate. Just days before, nominee Jack Ryan officially filed documents removing himself from the race against Democrat Barack Obama. Ryan's withdrawal was a result of a California Court ordering the release of sealed divorce files and resulting fallout from previous accusations made against him by his ex-wife, actress Jeri Ryan. Keyes declined to give an answer and opted to co ...

Gary Bauer: Encyclopedia II - Tony Campolo - Quotes

"I think that Christianity has two emphases. One is a social emphasis to impart the values of the kingdom of God in society - to relieve the sufferings of the poor, to stand up for the oppressed, to be a voice for those who have no voice. The other emphasis is to bring people into a personal, transforming relationship with Christ, where they feel the joy and the love of God in their lives. That they manifest what the fifth chapter of Galatians calls "the fruit of the Spirit". Fundamentalism has emphasized the latter, mainline churches have emphasized the former. We cannot neglect one for ...

Gary Bauer: Encyclopedia II - Adrian Rogers - On Politics and Social Issues

Like many influential conservative pastors (for example, Jerry Falwell and Billy Graham), Dr. Rogers had been somewhat active in advancing a conservative political agenda in the United States. Dr. Rogers had stated that Christians have a duty to be involved in government, stating that it is a sin for a Christian to abstain from voting in an election. Familial dynamics was a recurrent issue for Dr. Rogers. He focused most closely on fathers that he labeled "drop-out dads." According to Dr. Rogers, since the bible emphasizes the paterna ...

Gary Bauer: Encyclopedia II - Iowa caucus - Process

The Iowa caucus operates very differently from the more common primary election used by most other states (see U.S. presidential primary). The caucus is generally defined as a "gathering of neighbors". Rather than going to polls and casting ballots, Iowans gather at a set location in each of Iowa's approximately 2,000 precincts. Typically, these meetings occur in schools, churches, or libraries. The caucuses are held every two years, but the ones that receive national attention are the presidential preference primaries held every four years. In addition to the voting, the caucuses are used to discuss each party's pla ...

Gary Bauer: Encyclopedia II - U.S. presidential election, 2000 - Introduction

Al Gore publicly conceded the election after the December 12, 2000 Supreme Court decision in Bush v. Gore. The Court voted 7-2 to end the recount on the grounds that differing standards in different counties constituted an equal protection violation, and 5-4 that no new recount with uniform standards could be conducted. The decision was extremely controversial due to the partisan split in the court's 5-4 decision and the majority's extremely irregular instruction that its judgment in Bush v. Gore should not set precedent but should be "limit ...
