Galileo: Encyclopedia II - Galileo spacecraft - The Galileo spacecraft

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory built the Galileo spacecraft and managed the Galileo mission for NASA. Germany supplied the propulsion module. NASA's Ames Research Center managed the probe, which was built by Hughes Aircraft Company. At launch, the orbiter and probe together had a mass of 2,564 kilograms (5,653 pounds) and was seven metres tall. One section of the spacecraft rotated at 3 rpm, keeping Galileo stable and holding six instruments that gathered data from many different directions, including the fiel ...

Galileo: Encyclopedia II - Galileo Galilei - Astronomy
Galileo Galilei - Contributions. Although the popular idea of Galileo inventing the telescope is inaccurate, he was one of the first people to use the telescope to observe the sky, and for a time was one of very few people able to make a telescope good enough for the purpose. Based on sketchy descriptions of telescopes invented in the Netherlands in 1608, Galileo made one with about 8x magnification, and then made improved models up to about 20x. On August 25, 1609, he demonstrated his first telescope to Venetian ...

Galileo: Encyclopedia II - Galileo Galilei - Technology

Galileo made a few contributions to what we now call technology as distinct from pure physics, and suggested others. This is not the same distinction as made by Aristotle, who would have considered all Galileo's physics as techne or useful knowledge, as opposed to episteme, or philosophical investigation into the causes of things. In 1595–1598, Galileo devised and improved a "Geometric and Military Compass" suitable for use by gunners and surveyors. This expanded on earlier instruments designed by Niccolo Tartaglia and ...

Galileo: Encyclopedia - De motu corporum in gyrum

De motu corporum in gyrum (On the motion of bodies in an orbit) is a manuscript by Isaac Newton sent to Edmund Halley in November 1684. It derived the three laws of Kepler assuming an inverse square law of force, and generalized the answer to conic sections. It tried to set out the foundations of modern dynamics and extended its methodology by adding to the derivation of Kepler's laws the solution of a problem on the motion of a body through a resisting medium. Halley reported these results to the Royal Society on 1684-12-10 (J ...

Galileo: Encyclopedia - Jupiter

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and by far the largest within our solar system. Some have described the solar system as consisting of the Sun, Jupiter, and assorted debris,[2]; some describe Jupiter as the solar system's vacuum cleaner, due to its immense gravity well. It and the other gas giants - Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, are sometimes referred to as "Jovian planets." The Romans named the planet after the Roman god Jupiter (also called Jove). The astronomical symbol for the planet is a styliz ...

(243) Ida I Dactyl is a tiny asteroid moon (diameter 1.4 km) that orbits asteroid 243 Ida. It was imaged by the Galileo spacecraft on August 28, 1993; the Galileo mission member Ann Harch, while examining the delayed image downloads, discovered it on February 17, 1994. It was provisionally designated S/1993 (243) 1. The satellite was named after the mythical creatures called dactyls who ...

Galileo: Encyclopedia - Galilean

Galileans (or Galilæans) were members of a fanatical sect (Zealots), followers of Judas of Galilee, who fiercely resented the taxation of the Romans, and whose violence contributed to induce the latter to vow the extermination of the whole race. More generically, a Galilean is an inhabitant of Galilee. Galilean, as an adjective, describes some aspects of mathematics or astronomy associated with Galileo: see for example Galilean moons and Galilean transformation. This article incorporates text from the public domain ...

Galileo: Encyclopedia - Christoph Scheiner

Christoph Scheiner (July 25, 1573 or 1575 – June 18, 1650) was a German astronomer and Jesuit. He was one of the first to observe sunspots (in 1611), although he took these to be satellites of the Sun. He was assisted by Johann Baptist Cysat in his observations of this phenomenon. His book Rosa Ursina was published in 1630; by this time, he agreed with Galileo that sunspots were on the Sun's surface or in its atmosphere. Because the Maunder Minimum subsequently drastically reduced sunspot activity for many decades, his book remained ...

Galileo: Encyclopedia - Impetus

Impetus has several possible meanings: In the history of science, impetus is an obsolete scientific theory of motion, largely developed by Jean Buridan in the 14th century. It was superseded by the modern theory of inertia developed by Galileo Galilei. See main article: Inertia: History. In music theory, and specifically, piano theory, Impetus can mean double dotting a dotted note; for example if one double dots a crotchet, then instead of

Galileo: Encyclopedia - Beidou navigation system

The Beidou navigation system is a project by the People's Republic of China to develop an independent satellite navigation system. "Beidou" is the Chinese name of the Ursa Major constellation. Beidou 1A was launched on 30 October 2000 and Beidou 1B followed on 20 December 2000. China plans to complete the system with a second pair, and Beidou 2A was put into orbit on 24 May 2003. Unlike the GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo systems, which offer global positioning, Beidou uses satellites in geostationary orbit. This means that th ...

Galileo: Encyclopedia - De Phenomenis in Orbe Lunae

De Phenomenis in Orbe Lunae is a 1612 book by Collegio Romano philosophy professor Giulio Cesare de Galla that presents the first account in the Western world of bioluminescence. De Galla's inspiration came from Galileo's debate with Casciarolo regarding a "lapis solaris," a stone that emitted light seemingly on its own. In De Phenomenis de Galla asserts that the stone was only able to emit light after the stone itself had calcified. It released "a certain quantity of fire and light" that it had absorbed just as w
