Freedom Party of Austria: Encyclopedia II - Freedom Party of Austria - The coalition government

In the 1999 parliamentary election, the FPÖ received 27% of the votes, more than in any election before; by a small margin (about 400 votes, with 4.6 million Austrians voting) they even beat the ÖVP (the conservative "People's Party"), which had until then always taken first or second place in national elections. In early 2000, the FPÖ joined a coalition government with Wolfgang Schüssel's ÖVP. The Freedom Party had to take a junior part in the coalition, as otherwise the ÖVP would have continued their coalition with the SPÖ. T ...

Freedom Party of Austria: Encyclopedia II - Alliance for the Future of Austria - Presence in the Bundesländer

The organisations of the Freedom Party in the individual Bundesländer (states) reacted in very different ways to the creation of the BZÖ at first. The Carinthian branch of the Freedom Party, which enjoys a great deal of autonomy under the party's statutes, is the only state organisation which became a part of the BZÖ en masse and now forms its core. The Freedom Party in Upper Austria originally planned to decouple itself from the federal party and go its own way without joining the BZÖ for the time being. There were differi ...

Freedom Party of Austria: Encyclopedia II - Austrian presidential election 2004 - Campaigns

The campaign started in January 2004 with the announcements of Ferrero-Waldner and Fischer that they would run. Several other candidates also announced their intention to run, but they were not supported by a major party, their campaigns went virtually unnoticed by the media, and they failed to get the required 6,000 signatures supporting their candidacy. A notable exception was Franz Fiedler, head of the National Audit Office. In late February he announced that he was considering a candidacy, and that he had the support of important ...

Freedom Party of Austria: Encyclopedia II - Right-wing politics - Right-wing issues

In the 20th century, outside the United States, where capitalism was always supported by the many politicians and intellectuals, the most notable distinction between left and right was in economic policy. The right advanced capitalism, whereas the left advocated socialism (often democratic socialism) or communism. This distinction has shifted somewhat since the collapse of the Soviet Bloc, as mainstream politicians now accept limited capitalism to a large degree, but in a socialistic form in which ...

Freedom Party of Austria: Encyclopedia II - Political colour - Exceptions

Political parties vary the shades of their colours depending on the situations. Most U.S. politicians use red, white and blue together. In the UK, the Labour Party has recently used bold red with yellow lettering in areas of majority Labour support but also more purple tones in marginal Conservative areas. Other notable exceptions and variations to the above colour schemes are: In Australia, the Australian Labor Party will typically use red, and the Liberal Party of Australia typically blue, however this does conform to t ...

Freedom Party of Austria: Encyclopedia II - Far right - Usage

A simple, if vague, definition of "far-right" is someone deemed too right-wing to be accepted in the nation's mainstream Political Parties on the Right. "Far-right" ideologies and movements often advocate substantial intervention, typically government intervention, in society in order to protect or promote inequalities or privileges, especially those inequalities or privileges that are viewed as "traditional". It is often associated with extreme nationalism. This is in contrast to the left-wing, who advocate intervention in favor of "equalit ...

Freedom Party of Austria: Encyclopedia II - Pan-Germanism - Austrian identity today

In Austria, only the extreme right still clings to Pan-Germanism. During most of the Second Republic, this part was represented mostly by the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) (founded in 1955 and led by the internationally notorious populist politician Jörg Haider from 1986-2000). Even though the party ranks of the FPÖ are largely made up of members of Pan-German Studentenverbindungen, the old Pan-German wing is in a minority. At the very least, Pan-Germanism is not part of its official program or a seriously proposed policy, as it i ...

Freedom Party of Austria: Encyclopedia II - Liberalism in Austria - Introduction

In the Austrian Empire a liberal current evolved in the nineteenth century. When the national question became more important in Austrian politics, the current evolved in nationalist direction and so disappeared as a liberal current. Later attempts to reorganize liberalism were unsuccessful. The tradition of being associated with Pan-Germanism was carried forward from Austria-Hungary into the Austrian Republic. The Freedom Party of Austria was founded in 1955, but was even in the beginning a problematic movement including both liberals (espec ...

Freedom Party of Austria: Encyclopedia II - Liberalism worldwide - Introduction

One can argue what a liberal party is. In the list below, a liberal party is defined as a political party that adheres to the basic principles of (political) liberalism. This is a broad political current, that includes both right of center (or free market) liberals and left of center liberals. All liberal parties emphasize individual rights, but they differ in their opinion on an active role for the state. After liberals have gained power and realized their first reforms, one often sees a divergence within their ranks: ...

Freedom Party of Austria: Encyclopedia II - Friedrich Peter - Early life

Born as the son of a social democratic engine driver and a master baker's daughter, Peter joined the NSDAP in 1938 and volunteered for the Waffen-SS at the age of barely 17. During World War II, he served at the western and eastern fronts and achieved the rank of Obersturmführer in the 10th regiment of the 1st SS Infantry Brigade. This unit was part of the Einsatzgruppen which systematically shot hundreds of thousands of Jews behind the front during the summer of 1941. Although his unit was almost exclusively engaged in this activity, Peter denied any involvement or knowledge about them after the war. He was interne ...
