Yes, my understanding from those studying the Maya Calendar in depth, like Carl Johan Calleman, is that it should be seen as the ending of a time, an era giving place for a new start, a new era.

Carl-Johan Calleman believes this era to be the start of a new consciousness, see Mayan Calendar - 2012 and The Mayan Calendar

It is also a misunderstanding that the Mayan Calendar is predicting anything specific, my understanding is that it is describing the forces/energies influencing a particular time period, it's not mentioning any form of particular events taking place.

To put it extremely simple; the Mayan Calendar is describing the qualities of different seasons of the planet. Each season has its own qualities like the spring is the coming of warmth, great for sowing, the autumn is the time for harvest etc. The difference is of course that the Mayan Calendar is vastly more complex than that !

Another thing, I personally don't believe anything is GOING to happen. It is ALREADY happening. The consciousness of the planet is already under a tremendous change, that is; we are already in the change!!

Compared to seasons; the spring doesn't take place in one single day, at a particular date. The vernal equinox is at a particular date but that doesn't mean that the signs of the spring didn't start before that date, OR, that the day of the vernal equinox will be any special in itself.

I believe we are heading towards spring time, but as anyone living in the tempered zone will know; it may snow on the vernal equinox, or, it doesn't, but it is nice to know it is steadily getting warmer after a long winter !
