I moved to this country four years ago, and was shocked when I came here at the level of racism that still exists. Do you, if you live here, notice the same?
Why is America still so bad? Is it, do you think, because segregation has only so recently (within living memory) ended?
I think with each generation racism is getting better. My generation is much more open to other races than my parents generation was, and I assume my children's generation will be even more so. I do think this is because segregation is still very fresh. My parents can both remember going though it, and my father remembers a time where he used a "white" water fountain.
There are members of my family who lived segregation and yes, they see discrimination in everything that they do. Everything is a slight against them for reasons of race (or so they think).
I don't see them as being the same-so perhaps some of it is perception.

It does vary by where you live, although it is very much so alive in the US. Just the fact that the 2008 election has to include race shows this. I was raised in so many areas with different racial concentrations (Chinese, Japanese, African-American, Mexican, Cuban, Russian, Polish, Canadian, Arabic-Iranian and Iraqi) I've never really seen a difference in such things. Unfortunately the more race is talked about, even in an effort to get rid of racism it draws more attention to thing it seeks to get rid of.

I actually think it's getting worse in some ways, at least in some areas. I see a huge improvement in my generation but see the newest teen generation getting worse. I think it has a lot to do with the gangs that are becoming more prevalent for one thing. I also see a lot of racial tension in my particular area because many summer jobs are filled by Dominicans and Haitians that come over seasonally to work instead of to locals.
I most definitly agree that this election has shown just how big racism is in our country. I don't know how many people I know will not vote for Obama simply based on his skin color. It is so frustrating!

I believe that this is a problem with the likes of the affirmative action policies. All they do is draw attention to inequalities that once existed, and that now-well, who is to say how things really are. It seems very much subjective.
I am with you on this one for perception. I know many people that still see things they way they 'were' rather than the way they 'are'. Of course no one is perfect but I do remember having a friend that would always bring up the 'your family did this.......', how can you really reply to something like that without sounding insensitive? Its not like I wanted my family to do whatever you know?

I know exactly what you mean. You want to just tell them to get over it, but then that would be intolerant of the fact that they still are feeling a hurt over the issue. Instead perhaps you could help find out what would help them get over it?
I don't know how we could apply that to an international scale.
