I do not think that there is any more tolerance currently than a hundred years ago, people are just more guarded about what they say than they used to be. The PC movement saw to that, but it didn't change people's hearts.
I feel that most of the problem with tolerance is how a person is raised - If they are raised that whites are the only good people that is what they will believe, until they choose to believe differently or they have an event in their lives that forces them to see things in a different light. Do I believe that people are more tolerant than before? No - I agree with the statement that people are just more guarded than before.
I don't think that necessarily a person raised in a bigotted household will grow up to be the same way as the rest of the household. I was raised by a racist mother, and that did not produce a racist in me, yet it did my sister. What was different about me?
My husband is of a different race and my daughter is biracial.
I think that due to increased awareness there is an increase in tolerance as well. I agree with a previous poster who stated that tolerance is all in how one is raised. I think we are raising our children now to be more tolerant, and that in turn is also increasing tolerance in general.
The consciousness in human beings generally is rising to expose the spirit side of things. Materialism as an energy has reigned far too long. We are figuring out 'there really is more to life' than we had thought.
Tolerance is not a good choice of word for this - tolerance means I will listen to you, but I am right. There is no wiggle room to acceptance or respect. I would much rather be respected than tolerated by someone else.
There were 5 siblings in my family and I am the only one that sees the importance of the spiritual rather than the material. My family was based very much on materialism. So I can see how we all have within us a focus for our life that will take us where we need to be. Of course, it helps if we listen to the still, small, voice within.
I agree it is not really a different tolerance level as much as a different way of showing tolerance. I live in an area where people may still cross the street when they see a person of color or refuse to sit near them or share a bus seat. However these days such thins being admitted to can get you sued and thus we don't mention them.
