Exactly-there are ways to ask, if you really must. But honestly I don't think it's anyone's business but the parent's, so if you really must poke into my personal business, at least don't be rude or crude about it!
Ten years ago there was a Belonging to Mother Earth conference that I had the good fortune to attend. There were many indigenous peoples from all over the world sharing prophecys and concerns - it was extrodinary. One night the Aztec people offered a beautiful message through their dance. My memorey is hazy as I went into a trance as i watched. Before, during or maybe it was after the words "the honey generation" were spoken. I don't really know what that means or what was actually said, but in my altered state I saw children and gentle young people - all with beautiful light brown skin living in harmony across the Earth and I thought - so the meek do inherit the Earth. So for me all the bi racial children, youth and adults warm my heart and reassure me we are on the right track. It is not the world we live in now but who knows what it will be for the next generations - or even for us as we go through the 2011 energy gate - the changes are coming more quickly now we can all see it and maybe closed hearts will open.

I don't think it is "intolerance," but it sure sounds like "insensitivity." If people are not sure, they can at least keep quiet about it, but most people won't. Now, this could get very upsetting, more for your child, than for you. The best thing is to explain to the child about why you think people have wrong assumptions. She is an intelligent kid, you say; so she will understand. Another way out is to clearly introduce the kid as your daughter the first time you meet people, leaving no room for either wrong assumptions or insensitivity.
Thank you Essence for your kind words, This site, the articles, the forums, the references and most importantly the people can flourish. We all can make that happen. It might just be the time to turn the tide on narrow thinking and celebrate the richness of diversity. Bi racial children and their parents should be celebrated as it really is about how we are the same. Some people still have old boundries in their minds and actions and the rest of us can hold the vision of the last of those boundaries disolved now. Barak Obama's presidential candidacy will shine a great light on this.
