Our children

These are lines written by Kahil Gibran which have had a profound impact on my ideas of immortality. I would like to share them with you:

Your children are not your children
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you
And though they are with you they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow
which you cannot visit ;
not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them
But seek not to make them like you
For Life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

Re: Our children

Gibran Khalil Gibran is one of my favorite poets (I even tried to talk my husband into naming our son Jibran). There is so much wisdom there. I really like this one you have posted, and I'm saving it to my computer.

Re: Our children

What an incredibly beautiful yet wise poem. I am also saving this and will be printing it and then framing it. I especially like the last line as that is our job as parents, is it not? To send them off straight and true in life. Thank you for sharing that with us.

Re: Our children

Thankyou Serenity and Kaia.
I have found this more and more relevant and must admit at first I was a bit hurt that it should be put so bluntly. The fact that we have no claim on our children after putting in so much effort made me sore,
It is true though we have an immense responsibility to do our best by our kids regardless of how we may feel about certain things we cannot impose on them and I guess that is the hard part.
