Cooking and spirituality

A friend of mine told me she finds cooking very spiritual. I wouldn't know this since I absolutely hate cooking, but do any of you guys agree on this?

Re: Cooking and spirituality

I love cooking but in no way do I find it a spiritual experience. There is too much work involved, mostly in the clean up. If I had someone always to do the dishes, I might not mind so much!

See dishes I don't mind doing. So maybe we should try it out one of these days see if it's as spiritual like they say, you cook, I do dishes! If not spiritual then at least we'll have a full stomach!

Re: Cooking and spirituality

The process of preparing food, ingesting it and nourishing our bodies can indeed be a spiritual experience. Have you ever eaten while fighting at the table only to find yourself craving a snack later? The colors, nutrients and places of growth for the produce we eat especially are spiritual And lets not forget Kosher, the Jewish practice which governs what they can eat.

Re: Cooking and spirituality

Sometimes preparing food is a great joy for me and some times it is an effort - I love washing dishes though - the more water the better for this Pieces.
On a more serious note the preparation of food is a sacred event for many, especially when it is for a spiritual gathering. For instance at traditional Sundance the cooks take their job very seriously and pray as they prepare the food, serve and clean up. The dancers feel every bit of energy flying around the camp.
Keeping the mind clear and clean of bad thoughts for any cook is very important as the food absorbs the cook’s energy. In addition to Blessing food some people use a mudra to harmonize the energies that had been absorbed by the food - especially when eating food prepared from unknown cooks.
Many a Grandma or Mom will tell you her secret ingredient is love - this is ancient and true.
Using a mudra too you can charge/program food, water even medicine with a desired energy. I'd be happy to share the specifics if anyone is interested.
Blessings, Rainy

Re: Cooking and spirituality

Once again my dear Luminous friend you beat me to the punch....or should I say to the stirring of the kettle.....LOL

This thread gave me an idea for an article to submit to the local paper here through the writers guild I belong to and I have been working on that, so to Anahi who started this thread and to all of the other who have posted on it, I say thank you, for it was in reading your words that the idea for my article came to me. Thank You……

And Rainy, I, once again, agree with you wholeheartedly, (imagine that…LOL) but not necessarily on the dish washing part. Although I can and do find it a good time to contemplate and meditate.

Once again, thank you all for your words of wisdom and advice.

Love, Light and Blessings,

Namaste

Re: Cooking and spirituality

I find the greatest joys in the simplest of things. I enjoy cooking very much, but what I like to do is keep it simple and not use food processors and choppers and such. I like to wash and cut up everything by hand. I find that to be relaxing and enjoyable. I feel it’s because I am fully present when preparing food this way. To me that’s the spiritual aspect of it.
I don’t know if any of you all watch “Everybody loves Raymond” but Rainy’s mention of “putting the love in food” was the subject of one of their most funniest episodes I ever seen of that show. Raymond’s wife asked his mother to help her make one of Raymond’s favorite dishes. The mother told her she couldn’t do it as well because she didn’t know how to put the love in it. Well she gave her the recipe but changed one of the ingredients which caused it to taste terrible. She was so sad thinking she couldn’t figure out how to put the love in her meals like her mother-in-law. You have to see it to appreciate it.
Have a great day.
James

Re: Cooking and spirituality

I don't find cooking to be a spiritual experience but I think each of us connects to the universe in different ways. There are many experiences that I have heard from other people that I cannot fully share as some things must be felt to be comprehended completely.

Re: Cooking and spirituality

Cooking is the most rudimentary necessity for humans and as such I think the importance cannot be dismissed lightly.
As already mentioned it provides the nourishment but more importantly I think it is the time spent on combining the powerful forces of creation, the earth, the fire, the water and the air. Not just any combination will do, it must be harmonious and pleasing.
Now that surely must elevate cooking from a mundane chore to one of special reverence.
