Spiritual Music: I feel very close to Him when I sing

I feel very close to Him when I sing. When I sing live, the energy that emanates from the audience resonates with my energy and uplifts me. This is a divine feeling. That huge force of energy that binds us is the proof of His existence.
Interview with Kailash Kher by Times of India

When we are born, we are detached from the Almighty. We are forced to live in different yonis (births) till we attain nirvana and be with Him again. This is certain. But I don't understand why people live only for themselves and keep boasting about their laurels. We don't even have control over the breath we take, then why should we live under the illusion that we have control over things or people?

I believe in God and I am spiritual. There is a supreme force that guides us. He is the Panchtatva (five tatvas , namely, earth, fire, air, water and sky) that we are made of. It's up to everyone to visualise Him as they want. And spirituality for me is the purity of a human being. If we do what we believe in and not let ourselves deviate from that, that, to me, is being spiritual. I am a Sufi singer and believe in Sufism. In my opinion, most of the works in Sufism are a female's perspective of her Beloved-Parmaatma (God), and this is beyond love – it is deewaanapan (obsession).

I bow to the supreme power, I don't do any idol worship or go to a place of worship. My belief is that one should be aware of one's own self, if you do your introspection, then that is nothing less than any prayer. My prayer to him everyday is " Khuda mujhe itni khudai na de, ki mujhe apne siwa koi aur dikhai naa de " (Lord, don't give me so much power that I can't see beyond my own self).

But this is easier said than done. People, in order to achieve their dreams and desires, adopt ways that aren't true and do things that aren't correct, somewhere the material lust takes the purity and serenity of their soul away. It takes a lot of self-control not to be affected. As I have written about ‘Maaya’ (material wealth) in one of my songs titled ‘Tauba Tauba’, the lyrics of which go as ‘ Ki tu khwaab hai ya dhoka, tujhe koi samajh na paaya ’ (that materialism is a dream or an illusion, no one has understood so far). But I see no harm in acquiring material wealth, as long as your means and ways to acquire are right and your conscience allows you to do your thing. Then you are on the right track and can be spiritual even as you go all out to acquire wealth. This money can buy you luxuries but not happiness. Happiness is a feeling that gives you a high and we can derive it from our acts and deeds and not by money. It lies within you just like the Almighty who resides in each one of us and to reach Him we need to dig deep within and not search outside.

I feel very close to Him when I sing. When I sing live, the energy that emanates from the audience resonates with my energy and uplifts me. This is a divine feeling. That huge force of energy that binds us is the proof of His existence. I felt very close to God recently when I was recording a devotional song for AR Rahman's private collection. I saw that while I was singing everybody around me had tears in their eyes, it was as if He had descended to wash our souls. Everyone was moist eyed, but no one knew why they were crying. My one line mantra is to ensure that I don't hurt anyone with my work...
