Morals, hypocrisy and culture
Any statement about one's beliefs, morals, which is part of one's culture, puts one on shaky ground. To question what one calls one's culture is even more dangerous.
By: Robert Carr
Any statement about one's beliefs, morals, which is part of one's culture, puts one on shaky ground. To question what one calls one's culture is even more dangerous. Any belief in anything or even in not believing is based on some idea that has been passed down through time and is held to be true, is only a belief. Today all over the world the religious right is at war with the changing values and current way of living, through out the world. The old are under fire, and the outdated beliefs that one has are being questioned.
We cannot live in the past, it is dead and trying to keep the past alive will only create more problems. The so-called leaders both secular and religious are exploiting people by using religious ideas to suit their goals. The whole concept of religious texts, the so-called revelations from God or some very special understanding of God, is at the heart of the problems that mankind faces today. All authority in any idea must be examined with great care. Authority in any belief or a person's status needs to be questioned .Then and then only can you see the absurdity of such ideas.
Who gave them the right to tell you what to do and how to live? They want to be the guardians of culture and they themselves are immoral. They use religious sentiments as a reason to make outrageous statements and condemn others. At the root of their actions is to control people and yield power and to continue their aspirations and their self important status.
In the distant past, human beings invented language as a means for survival and to communicate with each other. However, slowly our thinking became more complex and our beliefs became our reason to kill each other.
The concept of some higher power that can help us get what we want, became what we call religious thinking. Religious thought was born out of our need to be permanent and secure in a world of constant change. Birth and death gave rise to the hope that there was a way to overcome death. .The search for permanence has become the cause for all our ills.
Anthropologist can give us clues to how civilization came about and how this notion of some outside power that created the world came into being. Self appointed priests became a part of the social structure who then demanded honor and a special place in society. They became the guardians of the religious beliefs of a particular culture. Worship and the building of temples became a business and an important part of the culture.
Generations of living and repeating the same patterns of thinking over and over again gave more continuity to these thoughts. These beliefs became more important as they offered comfort and security to the self. Human relationships are what make up the world. The two are not exclusive to each other. Thus all our thoughts are part of a collective consciousness.
We never question our beliefs and instead just accept them as facts, and give them a lot of importance. These beliefs and morals have become the means of controlling and exploiting man by creating a class of rulers, kings, leaders, priest and so on. On the other hand men also find comfort and feel secure in the presence of these leaders and guides.
We do not have the guts to question the beliefs that make up our culture. We just go on repeating them, calling our misery and Gods will or karma. We live in a world of ideas and explanations never questioning why we live in this pain and suffering.
What I call me and mine is an illusion and that identity is deep seated in our thought process. That center called me or the I is not permanent but is in a state of fear or insecurity, not knowing, not being able to continue, so it struggles to find some way to continue. Fear of coming to an end is at the center of this self. This so-called self is made up of thoughts, thoughts the culture has created. The real world of nature has no morals, ethics or right or wrong. Nothing is sacred or holy. We are not ready to accept that we do not know what life is, so we invent ideas like the spiritual, the divine and God which become our ultimate means to escape from our everyday misery.
Man has polluted the world and cannot reverse or change the course of events. Any attempt to change is born out of the religious mind, so we are stuck in this mess we have created. Thought cannot capture the movement of the living energy that expresses life.
