To empower the self we need to realize our weaknesses or those aspects of life that are holding us back in some way and/or are causing us some sorrow or discomfort. The next step is to use Rajyoga meditation and visualization techniques to eradicate these weaknesses.

To know your weaknesses, perform the following exercise:
  • Remember the darker times in your life when you experienced failure. What was the common weakness present in your behaviour or attitude at that time?
  • What are the negative or destructive trends in your behaviour due to which you or others experience pain or sorrow?
  • Sometimes certain traits or behaviour in others can arouse a negative response in us. What deceptions do you tend to succumb to? What is that negative response?
  • What are you most frightened of?
  • Now review your answers and summarize. What are your three main weaknesses?

Suppose you feel you lack contentment. To enhance this virtue, sit comfortably in a pleasant room with your eyes open.

Mentally withdraw energy from everything around you - do not reject or resist, but turn your attention inward. Create a point of consciousness on the centre of your forehead. Think of this point as a radiant star, a sparkling jewel, a kindled flame or a being of light. This will transmit positive energy, making you feel good about yourself.

Affirm this positive energy through positive thoughts and images about yourself as "I am a contented soul, I shower everyone whom I meet with the virtue of contentment", "I am a jewel of contentment" or "I am the child of the Supreme Being, the Ocean of Contentment".

Focus your energy on contentment, and let this become the object of your meditation. As you focus, you will give contentment life, turning a thought into a feeling.

Experience this feeling by "watering" it with your full attention.

During the entire day, you could visualize yourself performing each action in the canopy of the Ocean of Contentment.

Now perform this exercise for different virtues as cheerfulness, courage, tolerance, forgiveness, determination, etc; especially for those virtues you think are lacking inside you. You could also use this exercise to further consolidate virtues that already exist within you.

An important perspective of self empowerment is the realization of our strengths. Bringing them into our conscious understanding enhances our process of self empowerment.

To realize and review your strengths, sit comfortably in a pleasant atmosphere and let the body relax.
Bring your attention to the present...focus your awareness on the centre of your forehead...Visualize yourself as a soul, a sparkling point of light...listen to the sounds...close and far away...

As an observer just register the sounds...renounce the habit of judging what you experience as good or bad...just let everything be...If other thoughts pull your mind...just let them pass...in...and out again...finding peace...From this perspective of being a silent, detached observer, look at the thoughts, feelings and answers as they come, to the questions given below. Note the answers down.

• Retrospect to those times when you experienced your greatest successes. List the unique talents or strengths which you made use of at those times.
• List the specific traits which you admire in yourself.
• If you were to take the opinion of your family, friends and colleagues, what strengths would they say you possessed?
• List your most valuable assets.
• Now examine your answers and summarize. What are your main strengths?

Analyze your strengths and weaknesses (as discussed last week). Make up a series of questions which will evaluate how effectively you are using these strengths to elevate your personal and professional life and what negative repercussions are your weaknesses (shortcomings) having on the same.

Some questions that you can ask yourself at the end of each week to monitor your self progress are: Which strengths if acquired, would help me improve my stature at the workplace? Is any weakness proving to be an impediment in maintaining a healthy relationship with my family? Am I using my strengths to empower others? Does any weakness exist within me, which if erased, would enhance my level of contentment and lead to greater peace of mind?

Note three main strengths and three important roles you play in your life. Check if your strengths match the roles and introspect. Is there a new characteristic you need to develop. If a particular role is self selected and does not match your strengths - is it a good role for you to be playing.
