When the inner cry for creative living, which exists in all humans, is stifled in the pursuit of rat race living, various aberrations in physical, mental and spiritual health would inevitably result. In such a situation, all material possessions would lose their meaning.

It is not that one should not aspire for material acquisitions or money. In fact, financial well-being is the sine qua non for many human accomplishments. Ancient Indian philosophy also recognises the prime importance of artha (stabilising one's financial position) and dhana lakshmi (the repository of material comfort). However, it is also stipulated that such involvement with one's financial health should go with other sublime and noble pursuits, which too are vital and which would really be food to his intellect and the inner spirit.

This approach is verily the process of capitalising on the precious and rare gift of human birth. This is also the concept of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa of being in this world but not being of this world - akin to a lotus leaf being in water but not ever getting wet or affected by it. Right priorities would continually guide such an aspirant, whereby, he would ensure that one aspect of his life would not adversely impact upon the other.

In his book, Psychocybernetics, Maxwell Maltz observes how man is essentially a goal striving creature. His creative mechanism has to be at work constantly. Otherwise his psychosomatic and spiritual machine would become ineffective through disuse. He should always be fulfilled in the conscious realisation that he is doing justice to his subtler faculties as well. This enables him to obtain the right 'self image', so necessary for fulfilment. Maltz also points out that one should not crave to be a 'success', through accumulation or show, as if to prove a point to the common folk. He should, instead, try to be truly 'successful', through development of his creative powers and capacities.

Right and healthful approach would presuppose thus a vision and a goal in life motivated by one's true interests, capacities and cherished dreams. This is the concept of one's "creative mechanism" working effectively. One who lays such an approach for himself obtains, in consequence, not only the needed material comforts and worldly recognition but also poise, equanimity, balance, precision, real maturity, inner wisdom and enduring health. He is thus indeed doubly blessed, capitalising fully on his supreme gift of human birth!
