I wanted to say, this is the second reference in two days I have seen where the Mayan elders are saying the dates are not significant. I am going to have to learn some more on this. I have been studying/reading on the meaning of the Mayan calendar for many years now and have not heard this until now. I don't know if that means they, the Mayan elders and Time Keepers have alway said this, or if it is because we have tipped the scale, so to speak, in reaching the minimum mass consciousness of awakend individuals for the 'Shift' to be secured and made possible. I read somewhere many years ago that all that was required for the success of the Shift was, if I remember correctly, 1/10 of 1%; and we reached that level a few years back at the time of Harmonic Concordance; according to some.
I haven't had a chance to watch Drunvalo Melchizedek's video on this yet, so maybe I will find my answers when I get to. I hope to do that this evening. If you know anymore on this subject, please let me know.
I will say, personally I don't really feel the 'Shift' will be in the 'twinkling of an eye' as some purpose. I may be wrong, but I have always felt it would be more of a smooth slid not a quick jerk.....LOL

Nevertheless, what does makes December 21, 2012 significant is that is when the sun, earth, and our Galactic Center line up.
I am not married, by blind faith, to any culture's myths. But, I also do not believe in random coincidence.
It _cannot_ be mere coincidence that our Galactic alignment just happens to occur in the Winter Solstice of the year that the Mayan calendar begins a new cycle of 13 baktuns. Add to that the Hindu myths about Vishnunabhi, and the Hopi prophecy of the Rising of the Fifth Sun, and this all just seriously smells like Divine Providence to me.
I am not worried at all about the world coming to an end. The wicked Way of this world _NEEDS_ to come to an end. But, the world, ergo you and I, will not come to an end. The Mayan calendar is not a linear time span with a beginning and an end. It is a _CYCLE_, which means 2012, at worst/best, will be the end of this _phase_ of human history --- marking a much needed, and well-timed, uptick in man's evolution.
Sane people should welcome a new phase that brings to an end white supremacy, nuclear stockpiles, and the current oppression of 98% of humanity by the wealthiest 2%.
Many cultures do have some sort of prophecy or belief about the end of the world or a major change, although many of them don't offer any specific date of these occurances, but they do usually provide signs to watch for. Hopefully the world doesn't end, but instead just undergoes positive changes.
