Who here tries to supply some of their own food for consumption? Have you considered it as a way to not only reduce your own costs over the year, but also a way to reset the balance a little?
You see I don't think it hugely natural to have large swathes of land turned into gardens and not used to grow food. I think that large (unused) gardens add to the burden, the problem of too many people and not enough food on this planet.
I have a hard time producing my own food because I live in a condo. It's hard to try to have a produce garden when you're worried about somebody messing with it. I have tried, but it just doesn't work here. Looks like I'll have to move first. This is something I would really like to look into though.
... the problem of too many people and not enough food on this planet...
Well..who of us is too many? Is it You or is it me, Jonas, who should go first?
The current situation has NOTHING to do with number of present people. There is NO scientific evidence whatsoever that any kind of mal nourishment any where in the world is caused by lack of global resources!!!!!
It would, however, for you and me, be convenient, to see that the problem with poverty was because IT'S TOO MANY OF SOMEONE ELSE!
The idea that the world is over-populates is a "propaganda" to excuse the way of OUR (explicitly including my own) lifestyle!
My view of course!!

This is an interesting thread indeed! I find some sense in what both Jonas and InTheMeadow say.
I feel there is nothing called "too many" and because there are "too many," there isn't enough. I believe in the law of abundance that says there is enough, more than enough, for everybody. Most of us have this "lack mentality" and we think in terms of "not enough" and we give reasons such as "over population" or "too many mouths to feed." I feel that first we have to do something to get rid of this "lack mentality." There is enough; the only problem is we think there isn't enough.
Coming back to your idea of growing food--yes, it is a great idea! It appeals to me because I have a garden of my own, and I am trying to grow my own food. So far, I have got plenty of papayas, chillis, mint, runner beans, and bananas from my garden. The idea is to become self-sufficient where veggies are concerned. Of course, not everybody can do this! People in flats and those who work hard at a nine-to-five job might find this very difficult. But we who have the time and the resources can try it and enjoy the abundance of the earth.
I just typed a huge post in reply here and lost it. I think that you misunderstood me Jonas. My suggestion was not meant to be that there are too many people on the planet, but that the use of resources is unbalanced.
For instance, we have enough land in this country to supply much more of our own food needs, and instead it is turned over to gardens and so on, and we import much of our food instead.
I was saying simply that I am trying to supply more of the needs of my family so that I can avoid taking resources from elsewhere. The balance of lifestyles in this worlds is wrong-there are many over consumers in the West all while the East goes without. People who are lucky to be able to eat one meal of rice a day, when we waste food and over eat hugely (as a nation).
My first post was far more eloquent, but I hope that I have clarified my position a small amount. I can clarify more if needs be but I do NOT believe that the problem is the number of people on the planet-rather the misuse of the resources that are available to us.
I'm not sure of any other countries but yes in India I get to find many people who aren't having food or enough food, but the population is so high and the land of cultivation is damn less. Not sure what to expect in future.
I agree with what Jonas1 said about the "food shortage" being hype. There is no evidence of this. The world has the ability to produce enough food. In the United States where I live farmers are still being paid subsidies by the government ... not to farm. In fact, the problem seems to be distribution and poverty rather than an actual shortage of food. In countries where there isn't enough food, the people lack the financial resources to purchase it. The food aid program was about money. Not a food shortage.
I do garden. I love growing my own organic food that didn't require any transportation. I reuse rainwater during dry spells.

One of the reasons I love spring so much is because it means I can get my garden ready for planting. My wife and kids also love gardening because it allows us to get our hands dirty and forget about some of the pressures of the world. A home garden means we control how the produce is grown and when it is picked. Of course, the side benefit is a slightly lower grocery bill.
I am still working to plant in my small area that I do have. I ended up converting a partial on the side of our house as our backyard is not big enough and we have a corner lot. I started this late but hopefully by next year things will be looking better for my little spot.
