The Bible suggests that many more people than there currently are could be supported by this planet in paradise. I realise that the current issues with the planet are largely our doing-too many meat eaters, too many greedy people and an unfair distribution of available supplies.
What can we do about that? How should we better be feeding the world, and how many people could we safely support if we were not so greedy in the West?
like i previously said in other threads here, turning vegan would be one commonsensical step. educating yourself in terms of tolerance would be another. education, i think, i the key factor for obtaining the world we all want to live in: educate yourself to learn, to love, to save, to praise, to pray, to work.
there are many documentaries out there, many oh which are findable on freedocumentaries.org. there, i found a couple docs that made me turn vegan a few weeks ago, so i'm also new in the business.
People are having the tendency to change the world to make it better place to live but there are certain things that people need to change within themselves. Trying to bring that light among people can be done by educating all, trying to show some movies to bring about the change. I think providing some good shows that gives the importance of being vegan can make everyone get a thought and might even make them be willin to become vegan.
I hope this doesn't seem argumentative because I am seriously asking this, but how does going vegan help support a sustainable population? I don't see the connection given that we are having difficulty growing enough food for the world as it is.
I also don't want to sound argumentative, and I believe that everyone has a right to their own beliefs - including a persons beliefs on diet, But I don't think that going vegan will help fix the world. Don't get me wrong it would help, but the problem is really more of an issue with moderation. The people of the world have become greedy and they know nothing of moderation. I myself like how the native americans did things - they only took from nature what they needed, nothing more, and they always replaced what they took. I truely believe that if the world took a look at things like the Native Americans did we might not have as many problems as we do today.
I believe the numbers are something like 1 acre of food can feed as many as four acres used for cattle or something like that? Or perhaps it is the methane argument.
That said, I also don't think going vegan is the answer, though I would like to see an end to factory farming as it is just way too much suffering, and there is enough of that in the life of a food animal already.
The principle with turning vegan is that meat production takes a lot more land than does crop production. The animal has to be fed first, and it expends energy to grow and live. The total consumption of energy is greater because there is the animal's and your own.
If you just eat the plant, that the animal would have eaten, there is less energy wastage. It takes less land to feed a vegan than it does a meat or dairy consumer. That said, I was vegan for seven years and hated it in the end.
Theres enough food to feed the world twice over, the issue seems to be politics more than a shortage.
--- What ive always wondered with the vegan idea, is that, if tomorrow, everyone was like "Okay im going to stop eating meat and stop useing any product that even has a remote assosiation with animals" Then, what would be do with all the cattle/sheep/pigs/chicken etc etc, already on this planet in the billions. Would it be extremely disruptive to society to just let them go? Would they survive in nature? Would we just kill and eat the last of them then keep a few left over to keep the species going? Any ideas...
Ok, call me ignorant, call me a killer, call me what ever you choose. I do not understand all the hoop-la over eating meat. Do I approve of some of the techniques used to slaughter or the fact that animals are raised in mass quantity just for slaughtering...no. However, we also have to be realistic. Not everyone can afford their own little plot of land in which to grow their veggies or raise a few animals. Nor would there be enough acreage for everyone that exists to own a piece. Man has created this mess, so for those of us who choose to survive the only way we know how, which is buying meat or veggies that are not organic, so be it. I love my veggies, but I also enjoy a piece of meat. Man has been eating meat since the beginning of time, the only difference, we have alot more people to feed.
Everyone's opinion needs to be valued, I'm a vegan but that doesn't mean everyone who isn't vegan should change, my husband isn't vegan, we cook our favorite dishes and have them together, no issues at all.
