I had the most awful dream tonight. I was floating on my back on water. There was nothing in sight in any direction, I was completely surrounded. I tried to swim, but because there was nothing to be seen I had no idea whether I was moving anyway, and it was incredibly frustrating. Scary too.

Does this represent some kind of helplessness?

Large bodies of water are often symbolic of the unconscious. Most water dreams are representative of our emotions but since you are in calm water, that usually means peacefulness and safety.
