Fortune telling: Encyclopedia II - Index fund - Foundations of index funds

The Efficient Market Theory is fundamental to the creation of the index funds. The idea is that fund managers and stock analysts are constantly looking for securities that would out-perform the market. The competition is so effective that any new information about the fortune of a company will translate into movements of the stock price almost instantly. It is very difficult to tell ahead of time whether a certain stock will out-perform the market. See also:

Fortune telling: Encyclopedia II - Cait Sith Final Fantasy VII - Final Fantasy VII

He initially joins the party in Golden Saucer, a casino area, by offering to predict the future of Cloud as a fortune teller. REEVE: Well, I totally decimated my first cervical vertebra and my second, and so my body and my spine and my head were not connected. Only my neck muscles were holding my head on, and fortunately I didn't suffer any brain damage, at least none that I can detect. [laughter] But, you know, that's what they tell me at any rate. Fortune telling: Encyclopedia II - Tarot - Divination

Divination, or fortune-telling, is by far the most popular and well-known use of the Tarot in the English-speaking world. This is sometimes seen as an extension of the psychological use mentioned above. Alternatively, it is sometimes seen as a less sophisticated use of tarot. It can be argued that we sometimes perceive the signs of future events subconsciously only. For instance, you might be subconsciously aware that a relationship or job is in trouble, before you admit it to yourself. In that sense, it might be said that the Tarot can give ...

Bob (or rather, Kate) is one of the first characters to appear in Blackadder II. She is a somewhat naive young woman (she is convinced her mother is dead, despite her father's insistence that she ran off with his brother). Her insane father tells her he can no longer afford to keep her so, despite his pleas that she should become a prostitute ("oh please go on the game, it's a steady job, and you'd be working from home") she decides to disguise herself as a boy, and seek her fortune in London. Her Father points out the futility in walking ...

Fortune telling: Encyclopedia II - Destiny - Divination of destiny

In most cultures, ones destiny can only be learned about through a shaman, prophet, sibyl or seer. In Shang dynasty China, turtle bones were thrown ages before the I Ching was codified. Arrows were tossed to read destiny, from Thrace to pagan Mecca. Destiny is commonly regarded as fate, a fixed timeline of events that is inevitable and unchangeable, and the future knowable through means of divination. This has led to a misconception of divination as fortune-telling, though the actual practice accounts for the self-determination of individual people and an unknowable future. In divination, destiny ta ...

Fortune telling: Spiritual Theosophical Dictionary on Yamabooshee, Yamabusi

Yamabooshee, or Yamabusi (Jap.). A sect in Japan of very ancient and revered mystics. They are monks "militant" and warriors, if needed, as are certain Yogis in Rajputana and the Lamas in Tibet.

This Mystic brotherhood dwell chiefly near Kioto, and are renowned for their healing powers, says the Encyclopœdia, which translates the name "Hermit Brothers": "They pretend to magical arts, and live in the recesses of mountains and craggy steeps, whence they come forth to tell fortunes (?), write charms and sell amulets. They lead a mysterious life and admit no one to their secrets, except after a tedious and difficult preparation by fasting and a species of severe gymnastic exercise ! ")

Fortune telling: Encyclopedia II - Association for Research and Enlightenment - History

From 1931 until Cayce's death in 1945, people seeking a psychic "reading" from Cayce were asked to join the A.R.E.. This helped insulate Cayce from charges of fortune-telling (which was illegal in some U.S. states), as he was not charging a "fee" for his services but receiving a salary from the member-supported A.R.E.. (Its predecessor, the Association for National Investigators, had been supported primarily by a few major donors, and focused on major insti ...

The action takes place in a future New York City, one in which a major war has occurred, leaving behind some remarkable features. One location is known as Bomb Inlet, but the most bizarre is an installation called 99 Bastion West Side, a mega-brothel built where a nuclear explosion caused thousands of tons of liquid glass and ceramics to melt in an underground chamber. The result is a multi-colored, singing, solid lake which the owner, Chooka Frood, uses as part of a mystic fortune-telling act. It is here that Barbara D' ...
