 |  |  | Fort Dix: Encyclopedia II - Burlington County New Jersey - GeographyAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,122 km² (819 mi²). 2,084 km² (805 mi²) of it is land and 38 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.81% water.
Most of the land in the county is coastal and alluvial plain with little relief. There are a few anomalous hills, however, and one of them, Arneys Mount, is the highest of not only the entire county but all of South Jersey at approximately 260 feet (79 m) above sea level. The 9th Infantry Division saw its first combat in the North African invasion, 8 November 1942, when its elements landed at Algiers, Safi, and Port Lyautey. With the collapse of French resistance, 11 November 1942, the Division patrolled the Spanish Moroccan border. The 9th returned to Tunisia in February and engaged in small defensive actions and patrol activity. Although opposed to the Vietnam War, on August 7, 1969, Gore enlisted in the army to participate in the Vietnam War effort.
