Form: Encyclopedia - Form

Form (Lat. forma), in general, refers to the external shape, appearance, configuration of an object, in contrast to the matter or content or substance of which it is composed; thus a speech may contain excellent arguments (the matter may be good), whereas the style, grammar, arrangement (the form) may be bad. "Form is supposed to cover the shape or structure of the work; content its substance, meaning, ideas, or expressive effects." (Middleton 1999, p.141) The term, with its adjective forma ...

Form: Encyclopedia II - Piano Sonata No. 14 Beethoven - Form

The sonata has three movements: Adagio sostenuto Allegretto Presto agitato The first movement is written in a kind of truncated sonata form. A melody that Hector Berlioz called a "lamentation" is played (mostly by the right hand) against an accompanying ostinato triplet rhythm. The movement has made a powerful impression on many listeners; for instance, Berlioz wrote that it "is one of those poems that human language does not know how to qualify." The work was very popular in Beethoven's day, to the point of exasperating the co ...

Form: Encyclopedia II - Dithyramb - Form

Dithyrambs were sung by a chorus of up to 50 men or boys dancing in circular formation (there is no certain evidence that they may have originally been dressed as satyrs) and probably accompanied by the flute. They would normally relate some incident in the life of Dionysus. The leader of the chorus later became the solo protagonist, with lyrical interchanges taking place between him and the rest of the chorus. Competitions between groups singing dithyrambs were an important part of festivals such as the Dionysia and Lenaia. Each trib ...

Form: Encyclopedia II - Hydra genus - Form

Hydras are small animals with a body length ranging from 1 mm to 20 mm when fully extended. They have a tubular body secured by a simple adhesive foot. At the free end of the body is a mouth opening surrounded by a ring of 5 to 12 thin mobile tentacles. Each tentacle is clothed with highly specialised stinging cells called nematocysts. Nematocytes look like miniature light bulbs with a coiled thread inside. At the narrow, outer edge is a short trigger hair. Upon contact with prey, the contents of the nematocyst are explosively discharged, firing a dart-like thread containing neurotoxins ...

Form: Encyclopedia II - Rebec - Form

The rebec comes in a variety of slightly different forms, but is typically pear-shaped, with no clear division between the body and neck of the instrument (both being carved from the same single piece of wood). The body of the instrument is bowl-shaped, although the degree to which it is curved or flat can vary from instrument to instrument. The rebec originally came in two basic forms: a wider instrument played under the chin; and a relatively narrower instrument which was rested on the player's thigh and played with the bow in an un ...

Form: Encyclopedia II - Toy balloon - Form

Most toy balloons are a simple oval-like shape. Other balloons are longer and more cylindrical. Long balloons are often twisted and bent into simple, or intricate shapes which will hold their form when released. Balloon artists are people who quickly twist balloons into familiar or abstract shapes using the techniques of balloon modelling, usually for profit. Toy balloons are used as decorations and/or advertising space. Balloons are usually purchased in deflated form, however some party stores and vendors at special events will fill their balloons before selling them. While toy balloons are primarily a toy, they are also sometimes us ...

Form: Encyclopedia II - Invention music - Form

Inventions are similar in style to a fugue, though much, much simpler. They consist of a short exposition, a longer development, and a short recapitulation (if there is one at all). The key difference is that inventions do not contain an answer to the subject in the dominant key, where the fugue does. Invention music - Exposition. In the exposition, a short motif is introduced by one voice in the tonic key. This is called the theme. The subject is then repeated in the second voice in the dominant key while the initial voice either plays a count ...

Form: Encyclopedia II - Cheshire cheese - Form

It is a dense and crumbly cheese with a very sharp flavour derived from the area's abundant deposits of salt. It comes in three varieties: white, red (which has been dyed with annatto), and blue-veined (also known as Shropshire cheese). The blue-veined variety, which was once considered undesirable, is caused by mould penetration during aging. Cheshire cheese is considered by some to be a variety of Cheddar cheese, although cheshire cheese is not aged as long as most cheddars. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is an historic pub in London, located in an alley on Fleet Street. The name has be ...

Form: Encyclopedia II - Corrido - Form

Corridos, like rancheras, have introductory instrumental music and adornos interrupting the stanzas of the lyrics. However, unlike rancheras, its rhythm remains fairly consisten. The corrido has a rhythm very much similar to the European waltz; rancheras can be played at a variety of rhythms. Corridos often tell stories, while rancheras may be more poem-like. Like rancheras, corridos can be played by mariachi, norteño, banda, duranguense, Tejano and grupero bands. The instruments used to play the song differs with the type ...

The poem is in alliterative measure, in which the alliterative unit is the line and the metrical unit is the half-line. Its poetic vocabulary included sets of metrical compounds that are varied according to alliterative needs. It also makes extensive use of elided metaphors. The two halves of the poem are distinguished in many ways: youth then age; Denmark, then Geatland; the hall, then the barrow; public, then intimate; diverse, then focussed. Here is a small sample including the first naming ...
