FN FAL: Encyclopedia II - FN FAL - Production and use

The FAL was made by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (FN) in Liege and under license in a number of countries, including the United Kingdom, South Africa (where it was known as the R1), Brazil, Australia, Canada, Israel, Austria and Argentina. India manufactured FALs without license from FN. Mexico assembled FN-made components into complete rifles at its national arsenal in Mexico City. The FAL was also exported to many other countries, such as Venezuela, where a small arms industry produces some basically unchanged variants, as well as ammunition. ...

FN FAL: Encyclopedia II - IMI Galil - History
The Galil project began after the Six-Day War, and the design was selected by the IDF from two competing designs. The winner was based on the Finnish Rk 62 (a variant of the AK-47). The first rifles began to arrive in 1974, after the Yom Kippur War. The Galil was designed to be a domestically produced main battle rifle for the IDF, taking the best features of other rifles, such as the M16 and AK-47, and putting them into one rifle. That rifle could be adapted to any number of tasks. The result was the IMI Galil. The Galil was used by the infantry during the Lebanon War in 1982; but towards the mid-1980s, it wa ...

M16 rifle - Project SALVO. In 1948, the Army organized the civilian Operations Research Office (ORO), mirroring similar operations research organizations in Britain. One of their first efforts, Project ALCLAD, studied body armor and quickly concluded that they would need to know considerably more about battlefield injuries in order to make reasonable suggestions. Over 3 million battlefield reports from WWII were analyzed, and over the next few years they released a ...

FN FAL: Encyclopedia II - Karabiner 98k - Combat use

Karabiner 98k - Post-World War 2. During World War II, the USSR captured millions of Mauser Kar98k rifles and re-arsenaled them in various arms factories in the late 1940s and early 1950s. One of the reasons behind the Soviets keeping these rifles after World War II was in case the Soviet Union was invaded again in a future war. The Soviets wanted to avoid the situation where they could be short of infantry weapons, as it happened during World War II when the Germans invaded the Soviet Union, especially when the Cold War started with t ...

FN FAL: Encyclopedia - Carbine

A carbine is a firearm similar to, but generally shorter and less powerful than a rifle or musket of a given period. There have been many carbines developed from rifles, being essentially shorter rifles firing the same ammunition, although usually at a lower velocity and there have also been many where the carbine and rifle adopted by a particular nation were not technically related, such as using completely different ammunition or internal operating systems (though the carbine still being weaker, or of smaller size). Which is ...

FN FAL: Encyclopedia II - IMI Galil - Usage

The Galil's main problem is weight; it is heavier than the M16A1, at around 3.9 kg (8.6 lb) empty vs the M16A1's 2.9 kg (6.4 lb), and therefore often considered to be a greater burden as a personal weapon for infantrymen, although its short length due to the folding stock made it very popular with the troops (Galil 840/614 mm vs M16A1 986 mm). The weapon never caught on among Israel's numerous special forces units, who used AK-47's both for reliability, and because of the Galil's cumbersome weight. Fighting infantry units therefore were reis ...

FN FAL: Encyclopedia - Cartridge firearms

A cartridge or round packages the bullet, gunpowder and primer into a single metallic case precisely made to fit the firing chamber of a firearm. The primer is a small charge of impact-sensitive chemical that may be located at the center of the case head (centerfire ammunition) or at its rim (rimfire ammunition). Electrically-fired cartridges have also been made; see below. A cartridge without a bullet is called a blank. Cartridge firearms - Design. The cartridge seals a firing chamber in all directi ...

FN FAL: Encyclopedia II - IMI Galil - Variants

Nowdays, there are a number of models used: Galil ARM - the main version. Galil SAR ("short") - no bipod or carry handle, shorter barrel. Galil MAR ("micro") - which retains the internal features with a completely new frame and even shorter barrel. It has been reported that this weapon is subject to severe overheating, becoming too hot to touch after sustained automatic fire. A redesigned version is now in service with Israeli special forces in undercover operations, small enough to conceal under a jacket, yet extremely powerful. A Galil MAR variant with a redesigned receiver and front sight is in widesprea ...

FN FAL: Encyclopedia - 7.62 × 51 mm NATO

NATO's 7.62 × 51 mm rifle cartridge, otherwise known as .308 Winchester (though they do not have identical specifications), was introduced in the 1950s as a standard firearm cartridge among NATO countries — though it has also become popular among civilians. There are many types, such as tracers and blanks, as well as many makes of the round. It was introduced to service with a variety of firearms, primarily service rifles and machine guns. It is used in the M14 rifle and M60 machine gun in US service in the late 1950s. The c ...

FN FAL: Encyclopedia II - Second Chimurenga - Rhodesian equipment and personnel

The war saw the extensive operation of Rhodesian regulars as well as elite units such as the Selous Scouts and the Rhodesian SAS. The Rhodesian Army fought bitterly against the black nationalist guerrillas. The Rhodesian Army comprised regiments such as the Rhodesian African Rifles and conscription was eventually introduced to supplement the professional soldiers and the many volunteers from overseas. By 1978 all white males up to the age of 60 were subject to periodic call-up into the army; younger men up to 35 might expect to spend alterna ...

FN FAL: Encyclopedia II - Port Arthur massacre - Timeline of events

The murder spree began on the morning of April 28, 1996 at the Seascape guesthouse north of Port Arthur, where Bryant murdered the elderly couple who owned the business. It is believed that Bryant's late father had earlier made several offers to purchase this guesthouse. After Bryant's father committed suicide, Martin Bryant seemed to believe that this refusal had caused his father to become depressed. After leaving the guesthouse, Bryant drove to another property and enquired after the owner, a Mrs Larner. She had also earlier declin ...

FN FAL: Encyclopedia II - M14 rifle - History

The M14 was developed from a long line of experimental weapons based upon the M1 Garand. Although the Garand was one of the most advanced infantry rifles of its day, it was not a perfect weapon. Modifications were beginning to be made to the basic M1 rifle's design since the twilight of the Second World War. Modifications included adding a fully-automatic firing capability and replacing the 8-round "en bloc" clips with a detachable box magazine holding 20 rounds. Winchester, Remington, and Springfield Armory's own John Garand offered differe ...

FN FAL: Encyclopedia II - SKS - Design

A standard SKS is semi-automatic and has a fixed/hinged 10 round magazine which is loaded from the top of the rifle manually singly or with a disposable 10-round stripper clip. It is a gas-operated weapon which, like the FN FAL assault rifle, has a spring-loaded operating rod which works the action via gas pressure pushing against it. Also like the FAL, it has a "tipping bolt" action locking system. Some variants of the SKS have been modified, with limited success, to accept AK-47 detachable magazines (military rifles designed with fixed mag ...

FN FAL: Encyclopedia II - History of the British Army - The Great War 1914-18

History of the British Army - Organisation. At the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, the British Army was a small, professional force of 247,000 soldiers, over half of which were posted overseas in garrisons throughout the British Empire. The regular Army was supported by 224,000 reservists and 269,000 soldiers of the Territorial Force. The size of the Army was in stark contrast to the Royal Navy which was the largest navy in the world, while many of the Army's continental counterparts, such as the French and German Armies (both of whom employed conscription) numbered n ...
