Flies: Encyclopedia - As the crow flies

"As the crow flies" is a colloquial term used to describe the most direct route between two points on the Earth. It is most often used to differentiate distance along this route with that along a less direct route, such as a road or railroad, and is generally the same as the great circle route. Some people use the variation "by the crow flies". An example would be the distance between Key West and Pensacola, at the two opposite ends of Florida. Driving, the distance is approximately 792 miles or 1275 km, but directly across the Gulf of Mexico it is o ...

Flies: Encyclopedia II - Lord of the Flies - Anaylsis
Many people have interpreted "Lord of the Flies" as a work on moral philosophy. The enviornment of the island, a paradise with all the food, water, and all the necessities, can be seen as a metaphor for the Garden of Eden. Yet, the first appearance of the "beastie" is that of a serpent, as evil appears in the Book of Genesis. One of the major themes of the book is on the nature of evil. This is clearly seen in the conversation that Simon holds with the skull of the pig, which refers to itself as "The Lord of the Flies" (a literal tran ...

Flies: Encyclopedia - Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies is an allegorical novel by the Nobel Prize-winning author William Golding. It was Golding's first novel, and was published in 1954. Although it was not a great success at the time — selling fewer than 3,000 copies in the United States during 1955 before going out of print — it went on to become a bestseller, and a required reading material in many schools and colleges. It was adapted to film in 1963 by Peter Brook and again in 1990. The title is a reference to Beelzebub (the source is from the Hebrew ...

Flies: Encyclopedia II - Fly tying - Flies

Since the existence of fly tying many different patterns have been created. The Professional Fly Tying manual classifies flies into five main groups. Flies are usually classified as being wet, dry, streamer, or nymph. Fly tying - Wet Flies. Wet flies are flies that do not float above the surface of the water. Instead they float just below the surface. They usually imitate insects that have drowned. Blow-flies (also frequently spelled blow flies or blowflies) are members of the family Calliphoridae of flies (Diptera). Flies in this family are often metallic in appearance. Flies: Encyclopedia - Warble fly

Warble fly is a name given to several species of flies which are parasitic on cattle. Other names include "heel flies", "bomb flies", and "gad flies", while their larvae are often called "cattle grubs". Scientific names for varieties of warble fly include Hypoderma lineatum and Hypoderma bovis. Their larvae cause considerable harm and distress to cattle by burrowing deep into their flesh and causing large purulent swellings ("warbles") to develop on the skin when they re-emerge. The hide is rendered valueless by this damage, while the meat through which they have passed is un ...

The crane flies (Tipulidae) are a family of insects resembling giant mosquitoes. Like the mosquito, they are in the order Diptera (flies). They are sometimes called mosquito eaters, mosquito hawks, or skeeter eaters. The Daddy long-legs is one of three unrelated arthropods, one of which is the crane fly. Flies: Encyclopedia - Volucella pellucens

Volucella pellucens is a hover-fly. It occurs in much of Europe, and across Asia to Japan. It is about 15-16 mm in length with a broad body. It is mainly black, but the front part of the abdomen has a broad yellow band, giving it the appearance of a bee or wasp. The two wings are transparent, as with most flies, but the leading edge is amber, and there is a brown patch on each wing. The mimicry of bees or wasps in shape and coloration is shown by other hover-flies, and it thought that this protects against falling ...

Flies: Encyclopedia - Whitefly

The whiteflies, comprising the family Aleyrodidae, are small homopterans which feed on the underside of plant leaves. When you tap the leaf, a swarm of flies will cloud before re-settling under the leaf. Whiteflies damage plants when they feed upon the phloem. The plants lose turgor and react to the flies' toxic saliva. As whiteflies congregate in large numbers, they overwhelm plants quickly. They also excrete honeydew, which promotes mold growth ...

Flies: Encyclopedia - Wingtip vortices

Wingtip vortices are vortices that develop at the tip of a wing as it flies through the air (or potentially another fluid). Wingtip vortices dramatically reduce the lift generated by the wing, and are therefore critically important in aerospace engineering. Wingtip vortices also form the major compononent of Wake turbulence, or "Jet-wash." Wingtip vortices - Cause and effects. As a wing flies through the air, it generates a low pressure zone on top of the wing through Bernoulli's principle. Fluids n ...
