First Council of Nicaea: Encyclopedia II - First Council of Nicaea - The Nicene Creed symbol

By and large, many creeds were acceptable to the members of the council. From his perspective, even Arius could cite such a creed. For Bishop Alexander and others, however, greater clarity was required. Some distinctive elements in the Nicene Creed, perhaps from the hand of Hosius of Cordova, were added. Jesus Christ is described as "God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God." Jesus Christ is said to be "begotten, not made." Finally, he is said to be "from the substance of the Father." First Council of Nicaea: Encyclopedia - Psilanthropism

In Christianity, Psilanthropism or Socinianism is a Christological view that denies the divine nature of Jesus. The presumed etymology of "psilanthropism" stems from the Greek psilo (merely, only) and anthropos (man, human being). Psilanthropism was rejected by the ecumenical councils, especially in the First Council of Nicaea, which was convened to deal directly with this. Compare with: Heresy See: Nicene Creed, Holy Trinity, Arian, Socinianism ...

First Council of Nicaea: Encyclopedia - Constantinian shift

Constantinian shift is a term used by Anabaptist and Post-Christendom theologians to describe the gradual shift towards Christendom. This shift began in 312 when Emperor Constantine I adopted Christianity as his imperial cult after the Battle of Milvian Bridge. His legions, who were victorious, fought under the Labarum, the first two Greek letters of Christ's name. In 313 the Edict of Milan legitimized Christianity alongside other religions practiced in the Roman Empire. In 325, the First Council of Nicaea signalled consolidati ...

First Council of Nicaea: Encyclopedia - Audianism

Audianism was a Fourth Century Christian heresy. The Audians were named after their leader, Audius (or Audaeus). Their heretical beliefs included both anthropomorphism (holding that God has human form) and quartodecimanism (honouring the death of Christ on the same day as the Jewish Passover). The First Council of Nicaea, which attempted to unify the early church, finally outlawed quartodecimanism. The Audians, however, continued this practice. Epiphanius called attention to the Audian heresy (as well as other heresies) ...

First Council of Nicaea: Encyclopedia - Gnosticism

Gnosticism is a blanket term for various mystical initiatory religions, sects and knowledge schools, which were most prominent in the first few centuries AD. It is also applied to modern revivals of these groups and, sometimes, by analogy to all religious movements based on secret knowledge gnosis, thus can lead to confusion. The occult nature of gnostic teaching (as seen from a modern viewpoint) and the fact that much of the material relating to the schools comprising Gnosticism has traditionally come from critiques by orthodo ...

First Council of Nicaea: Encyclopedia - Council of Sirmium

The Council of Sirmium is the name primarily given to the third Council of Sirmium which marked a temporary compromise between Arianism and the Western bishops of the Christian church. In all, there were four councils held at Sirmium (now Sremska Mitrovica in the Vojvodina province of Serbia and Montenegro) between 347 AD and 359 AD of which at least three dealt primarily with the Arian issue. First Council of Nicaea: Encyclopedia - Coptic calendar

The Coptic calendar, also called the Alexandrian Calendar, is used by the Coptic Orthodox Church. It is based on the Ancient Egyptian calendar. To avoid the calendar creep of the latter, a reform of the Ancient Egyptian calendar was introduced at the time of Ptolemy III (Decree of Canopus, in 238 BC) which consisted in the intercalation of a 6th epagomenal day every fourth year. However, this reform was opposed by the Egyptian priests, and the idea was not adopted until 25 BC, when the Roman Emperor Augustus formally reformed t ...

First Council of Nicaea: Encyclopedia - Iconoclasm

Literally, iconoclasm is the destruction of religious icons and other symbols or monuments, usually for religious or political motives. In Christian circles, iconoclasm has generally been motivated by a literal interpretation of the second of the ten commandments, which forbids the making and worshipping of "graven images". It has sometimes been motivated by christological or even political concerns as well. People who engage in such practices are called iconoclasts, a term that has come to be applied to any person who breaks or disdains established dogmas or conventions.
