fire-control system: Encyclopedia - Upholder/Victoria class submarine

The Upholder/Victoria-class submarines also known as the Type 2400 due to their displacement of 2,400t) were diesel-electric hunter-killer (SSK) submarines designed in Britain the late 1970s to supplement the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine force. That force was intended to comprise 18 nuclear-powered attack boats (SSNs) and four ballistic missile boats (SSBNs), but construction of the SSNs fell behind schedule, and the construction plans were altered to include ten modern SSKs as well. Originally named the UpholderIncluding:

fire-control system: Encyclopedia - Centurion tank

The Centurion was the primary British Main Battle Tank of the immediate post-war era, and considered by many to be one of the best British tank designs of all time. Designed during the Second World War it served in Europe, but arrived just too late for combat. It went on to provide excellent service during the Korean War where it outperformed both US and Soviet designs by a wide margin. It would go on to be one of the most widely used tank designs, equipping armies around the world, with small numbers still in service until the 1990s. ...

fire-control system: Encyclopedia - Anti-aircraft warfare

Anti-aircraft warfare, or air defense, is any method of engaging military aircraft in combat from the ground. Various guns and cannons have been used in this role since the first military aircraft were used in World War I, growing in power and accuracy over the years. Starting in the post-World War II era the guns were joined by the guided missile, specifically the "surface-to-air mis ...

fire-control system: Encyclopedia II - Upholder/Victoria class submarine - Design

The boats were originally built by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd for the Royal Navy, but saw only brief service before being mothballed in favour of an all nuclear force. They are essentially identical to modern nuclear submarines (with the distinctive nuclear shape and sonar-deflecting tiles) but run on diesel engines instead of nuclear reactors (which limits their range, but conversely makes them quieter and more manoeuvrable). It is foreseen that with the maturity of fuel cell technology the ships will be converted over to that power system, which could allow them to operate at sea almost indefinitely ...

fire-control system: Encyclopedia II - Anti-aircraft warfare - History

Anti-aircraft warfare - Earliest use. The earliest known use of weapons specifically made for the anti-aircraft role occurred during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. After the disaster at Sedan, Paris was besieged and French troops outside the city started an attempt at resupply via balloon. Krupp quickly modified a 1 pounder (20 mm) gun to be mounted on top of a horse-drawn carriage for the purpose of shooting down these balloons. Very little information on this weapon has been published. See also:

fire-control system: Encyclopedia II - F-4 Phantom II - Development

In 1953, McDonnell Aircraft began work on modernizing its F3H Demon naval fighter. Seeking expanded capabilities and better performance, the company developed several projects including F3H-E with a Wright J67 engine, F3H-G with two Wright J65 engines, and F3H-H with two General Electric J79 engines. The J79-powered version promised a top speed of Mach 1.97. On 19 September 1953, McDonnell approached US Navy with their proposal for a "Super Demon." Uniquely, the aircraft was to be modular -- it could be fitted with a one ...

fire-control system: Encyclopedia II - Phased array - Usage

The relative amplitudes of — and constructive and destructive interference effects among — the signals radiated by the individual antennas determine the effective radiation pattern of the array. A phased array may be used to point a fixed radiation pattern, or to scan rapidly in azimuth or elevation. When phased arrays are used in Sonar it is called beamforming. The phased array is used for instance in optical communicati ...

fire-control system: Encyclopedia II - Norwegian Campaign - German invasion

Norwegian Campaign - Movement of the fleets. The German invasion first started on April 3, 1940 when supply vessels began to head out in advance of the main force. The Allies initiated their plans on the following day, with sixteen Allied submarines ordered to the Skagerrak and Kattegat to serve as a screen and advance warning for a German response to Operation Wilfred, which was launched the following day when Admiral William Whitworth in the HMS Renown set out from ...

fire-control system: Encyclopedia II - Merkava - Merkava Mk 4

The Merkava Mk 4 is the latest generation in Israel's Merkava main battle tanks series, in service from 2004. It offers extra protection to the crew with more powerful and accurate fire systems. The Merkava has improved armor on the front and sides of the tank, and even the top of the turret, making it one of the best protected tanks in the world. The armor is modular so when the tank is hit, only the damaged armor plates need replacement. The Mk 4 also has additional crew survivability features: Each tank component is designed ...

fire-control system: Encyclopedia II - Norwegian Campaign - Ground campaign

When the nature of the German invasion became apparent to the British military, it began to make preparations for a counterattack. Dissension amongst the various branches was strong though, as the British Army, after conferring with Otto Ruge, wanted to assault Trondheim in Central Norway while Churchill insisted on reclaiming Narvik. It was decided to send troops to both locations as a compromise. Norwegian Campaign - Campaign in Central Norway. The original plans for the campaign in Central Norway called ...

fire-control system: Encyclopedia II - Phased array - Mathematical perspective and formulae

A phased array is an example of N-slit diffraction. Since each individual antenna acts as a slit, emitting radio waves, their diffraction pattern can be calculated by adding the phase shift Φ to the fringing term. We will begin from the N-slit diffraction pattern derived on the diffraction page. Now, adding a Φ term to the fringe effect in the second term yields: Taking the square of the wave function gives us the intensity of the wave. Now space the emitters a distance apart. This distance is chosen for simplicity of calculation ...

fire-control system: Encyclopedia II - Norwegian Campaign - Analysis

The operation as planned was a decisive success for Germany. Both Denmark and Norway were occupied with relatively light casualties: 3,800 Germans killed and 1,600 wounded. Surprise was almost complete, particularly in Denmark, and only in the Narvik area did the invasion prove problematic. The Luftwaffe lost about 100 aircraft, or roughly 10% of the force committed. At sea, however, the invasion proved a significant setback. The Kriegsmarine lost 3 cruisers, 10 destroyers, and 6 submarines, leaving the navy threadbare during the summer months when Hitler ...

fire-control system: Encyclopedia II - F-4 Phantom II - F-4s in fiction

In the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, there is a Sunday strip where Calvin experiences technical problems (for example a landing gear malfunction) while piloting an F-4 Phantom. In reality, he is trying to assemble a model of an F-4 and not doing very well at it. The technical difficulties in his daydream reflected difficulties in assembling the model, such as being unable to see through the canopy due to smeared glue. The F-4 made movie appearances in The Great Santini, Red Flag, Iron Eagle II, Forrest ...

Norwegian Campaign - Value of Norway. Both the United Kingdom and France had signed military assistance treaties with Poland, and two days after Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, both western nations declared war against Germany. However, neither country opened up a western front, and no shots were fired between the sides for several months in what became known as the Phony War. During this time, both sides were looking for secondary fronts. For the Allies, in particular the French, it was based ...
