Ferrari - 1929-1946.
Founder Enzo Ferrari never intended to produce road cars when he formed Scuderia Ferrari in 1929 as a sponsor for amateur drivers headquartered in Modena. Ferrari prepared and successfully raced various drivers in Alfa Romeo cars until 1938, when he was officially hired by Alfa as head of their racing department.
In 1940, upon learning of the company's plan to absorb his beloved Scuderia and take control of his racing efforts, he quit Alfa. Because he was prohibited by co ...

Scuderia Ferrari - 1929-1950.
Scuderia Ferrari was founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1929 as a sponsor for amateur drivers in various races, though Ferrari himself had raced a bit in Fiat cars before that date. The idea came about on the night of November 16 at a dinner in Bologna, where Ferrari solicited financial help from Augusto and Alfredo Caniato, textile heirs, and wealthy amateur racer Mario Tadini. He then gathered a team which at its peak included over forty drivers, most of whom raced in Alfa Romeo cars; Enzo himself continued racing, with moderate success, un ...

 | | | Ferrari - History: Encyclopedia II - History of Ferrari - 1961 The great walkoutEnzo Ferrari's strong personality had served his company and racing team well for decades. But internal tensions reached the boiling point in November of 1961. Long-time sales manager, Girolamo Gardini, had long chafed at Enzo's wife, Laura's involvement in the company. The two frequently argued, but their dispute became a crisis for the company when Gardini made an ultimatum to Enzo: If tensions continued, he would leave the company.
Enzo was never a man to accept a challenge to his authority, and he dealt with the situation with a t ...

 | | | Ferrari - History: Encyclopedia II - History of Formula One - Schumacher and Ferrari dominanceWhen Michael Schumacher was brought to Ferrari by Jean Todt in 1996, it was to rebuild the team. Several arduous years of nearly-there followed, but the 1999 season was where it all started. Schumacher was leading the World Championship when he broke his leg at Silverstone. However, team mate Eddie Irvine pressed on, losing by only two points to Mika Häkkinen.
The glimmer of hope for the passionate fans of the team (tifosi) that came from this however, was that Ferrari ...

 | | | Ferrari - History: Encyclopedia II - History of Formula One - After the Ferrari dominanceIn 2005, F1 saw Ferrari fade out of sight, as the works Renault team dominated the early part of the season, and Fernando Alonso forged a clear championship lead. In the latter part of the season McLaren were significantly the stronger team, with consistently better results and a win tally of 6 from 7 races. However their early record of poor reliability had meant that catching Renault in either Drivers' or Constructors' Championships was a tall order.
For a while it looked close between Räikkönen and Alonso, but by Brazil Fernando ...

 | | | Ferrari - History: Encyclopedia II - Scuderia Ferrari - SponsorshipMarlboro have sponsored Ferrari for decades and have been a title sponsor since 1997 (prior to which they sponsored McLaren).
In September 2005 Ferrari announced they had signed an extension of their sponsorship arrangement with Marlboro (Philip Morris) until 2011. This comes at a time when tobacco sponsorship has become illegal in the European Union and other major teams have withdrawn from relationships with tobacco companies (for example McLaren ended their eight year relationship with West). In reporting the deal, F1 Racing ...

 | | | Ferrari - History: Encyclopedia II - Ferrari 512 - 25 Ferrari 512S BuiltWithin 9 months Ferrari manufactured 25 512S cars, with even chassis numbers from 1002 to 1050. Of those cars, 19 were raced in 1970, 5 of them being spyders. Of the cars manufactured for the 1970 season, but not raced that year, the 1020 was converted at the end of the season as a 512M and sold to NART, which entered it in competition in 1971. The 1024 remained unsold in 1970, was transformed into a 512M and sold one year later to the Scuderia Brescia Corse. The 1036 was used as test car by the racing division of Ferrari. Later it was sold to Solar Productions for Steve McQueen's ...

 | | | Ferrari - History: Encyclopedia II - History of Formula One - The turbo F1 era1977 saw the start of one of the most troublesome times in Formula One history. It began with two teams - the long-established Lotus team and newcomer Renault of France.
Renault was the first to reveal their idea of the revolution when their RS01 made its first appearance powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged engine. Although supercharged engines were successful in past decades and the provision for turbocharged engines had existed for 11 years, no F1 team had ever attempted to build an engine to take advantage of the superior power, fe ...

 | | | Ferrari - History: Encyclopedia II - History of Formula One - Domination of McLaren and WilliamsWith controversy at last left behind, the Formula One teams flourished through the remainder of the 1980s and into the 1990s. Despite the overwhelming dominance of two teams - McLaren and Williams - this period is regarded (perhaps ironically) as one of the brightest spots in F1's 50 year history.
It was, as stated, the era of McLaren and of Williams. Niki Lauda, coming out of retirement for a hefty sum in 1982, pipped his promising young teammate Alain Prost to the title in 1984 by a mere half point, the closest ever finish in Formul ...

 | | | Ferrari - History: Encyclopedia II - History of Formula One - Technology emergesIn 1962, the Lotus team ran the Lotus 25 powered by the new Coventry-Climax FWMV V8 engine. The car had an aluminium sheet monocoque chassis instead of the traditional tubular design. This proved to be the greatest technological breakthrough since the introduction of rear-engined cars. However the Lotus 25 was unreliable. Jim Clark finished second leaving the title to Graham Hill and his BRM.
As soon as the car and the engine became reliable, the era of the Lotus and of Jim Clark began. Clark won two titles in three years (in 1963 and ...

 | | | Ferrari - History: Encyclopedia II - History of Formula One - Sponsorship arrivesAlthough they failed to win the title in 1967, at the end of the season the Lotus 49 and the DFV engine were mature enough to make the Lotus team the dominant force again. Unsurprisingly the season-opening 1968 South African Grand Prix confirmed this, with Jim Clark and Graham Hill finishing 1-2.
In the next few months came three revolutions that changed Formula One drastically. The first came in April of that year, when Lotus's Formula Two team appeared at a race in Barcelona in the Red, Gold and White colors of Imperial Tobacco. As ...

 | | | Ferrari - History: Encyclopedia II - History of Formula One - Safety rules and regulationsBy 1994, the last death in Formula 1 was nearly a decade past, that of Elio de Angelis during testing in 1986. There had been several horrifying accidents (for example Nelson Piquet and Gerhard Berger at Imola, or Martin Donnelly in Spain), but no fatalities. The speed of Formula 1 cars had continuously risen over 8 years, despite turbocharged engines being made illegal and reducing the width of tyres and eventually removing driver aids. There was an "air of invincibility" in Formula 1, a ...

 | | | Ferrari - History: Encyclopedia II - History of Formula One - The early yearsIn 1950, as an answer to the Motorcycle World Championships introduced in 1949, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) organized the first ever official World Championship for Drivers using the Formula One rules as laid out after the war. These regulations called for the use of 4.5 litre atmospheric engines or 1.5 litre supercharged engines. The organization of the championship, to be held across the five 'major' Grands Prix of Europe, was a mere formalization of what had already been developing in Grand Prix racing during the ...

 | | | Ferrari - History: Encyclopedia II - History of Formula One - The rear engine revolution1958 was a watershed in another crucial way for Formula One. Stirling Moss won the Argentina GP driving a rear-engined Cooper entered by the private team of Rob Walker, and powered by a 2 litre Coventry-Climax Straight-4. This was the first victory of a rear-engined (actually mid-engined) car in Formula One. The next GP in Monaco was also won by the same Cooper driven by Maurice Trintignant. Powered by engines of less than 2.5 litre, the Coopers remained outsiders in 1958 ; but as soon as the new 2.5 litre Coventry-Climax engine was ava ...
