Fawlty Towers: Encyclopedia II - Die Another Day - Overview

The movie departs from the usual Bond formula in several ways. Die Another Day begins with an action set-piece which, instead of a comic ending, ends with Bond captured by the North Korean army, after which he is tortured for fourteen months, depicted in a stylized manner through the title sequence. The movie also shows some attempts to improve the appeal of Bond to a younger audience, featuring two separate scenes of Bond surfing, a more contemporary soundtrack (by David Arnold), and extensive use of The Matrix-style slow-moti ...

Fawlty Towers: Encyclopedia II - Hitler salute - Satirical use

Satirical use of the salute dates back to anti-Nazi propaganda in Germany before 1933. The photomontage artist John Heartfield used Hitler's modified version, with the hand bent over the shoulder, in a poster that linked Hitler to big business. A giant figure representing right-wing capitalists stands behind Hitler, placing money in his hand, suggesting "backhand" donations. The caption is, "the meaning of the Hitler salute". During the war the allies also used the salute in satirical ways, often to poke fun at the Nazis. In Charlie C ...

Fawlty Towers: Encyclopedia II - Moustache - Moustache growing competitions

In North America, many groups of men (co-workers, friends, and students) often partake in moustache growing competitions. They are usually fun in nature and offer a bonding experience for groups of young men. The ultimate goal is to grow the most full and well-groomed moustache in the least amount of time. In more robust competetions, as mustaches are seen as a symbol of male virility, the winner is usually seen as the most manly of the competitors. Many competitions exist at any given tim ...

Fawlty Towers: Encyclopedia II - Celebrity appearances in Doctor Who - First Doctor stories

Celebrity appearances in Doctor Who - Footnotes. Note 1: The producers had originally planned to have The Beatles appear as elderly versions of themselves, but had to settle for using a filmclip from a BBC musical series. Reportedly, this particular variety show is one of many that were deleted, therefore making the clip seen in The Chase the only surviving footage of this Beatles performance. Note 2: Jean Marsh was at one time married to Jon Per ...

Fawlty Towers: Encyclopedia II - Carry On Girls - Trivia

Fircombe is of course Brighton, the British seaside town that had previously featured in Carry On At Your Convenience. Valerie Leon's voice was dubbed throughout by June Whitfield - the reasons for this have been lost to the mists of time. The shoddy editing - particularly noticeable in the scene where Barbara Windsor and Valerie Leon discuss Bernard Bresslaw's latest publicity stunt - has been significantly cleared up in the 2003 Carlton DVD release. There are still several continuity botches, however. Arnold Ridley, familiar as Godfrey from Dad's Army, has a memorable two ...

Fawlty Towers: Encyclopedia II - Barry Evans - Career

Gifted with an appealing boyish face, Evans actor career was based on an image of innocent youthfulness. He appeared in the film Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush (1967), where he was perfectly cast as a sex starved boy who finds it difficult to lose his virginity. One of his first television credits was in the soap opera Crossroads in 1964, but his first major role was in the sitcom Doctor in the House, based on Richard Gordon's series of novels that had already being adapted as feature films. Fawlty Towers: Encyclopedia II - BBC Television Centre - The building

The building features a distinctive circular central block (often affectionately referred to by staff as the "doughnut") around which are studios, offices, engineering areas and the new News Centre. In the centre of the main block is a statue of the Greek god of the sun, Helios, which is meant to symbolise the radiation of television light around the world. At the foot of this statue are two reclining figures, symbolising sound and vision, the components of television. (This structure was originally a working fountain but due to the building ...

Fawlty Towers: Encyclopedia II - Hitler in popular culture - How Hitler is represented after his lifetime

After his lifetime, Hitler continued to be depicted as incompetent or foolish. However, whilst Hitler's anti-Semitic policies were well known during his lifetime, it was only after his death that the full horrors of the Holocaust became known. This, coupled with Hitler no longer being a current threat, has meant that the way he is depicted in popular culture has changed since 1945 as a sinister and diabolical figure. Mel Brooks' comedy The Producers featured a play-within-a-play called Springtime for Hitler, featured dan ...

Fawlty Towers: Encyclopedia II - John Cleese - Biography

John Cleese was born in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England to Reginald Francis Cleese and Muriel Cross. His family's surname was previously "Cheese", but his father, an insurance salesman, changed his surname to "Cleese" upon joining the army in 1915 [1]. As a boy, Cleese was educated at Clifton College in Bristol, from which he was expelled for a humorous defacing of school grounds: he used painted footsteps to suggest that the school's statue of Field Marshal Douglas Haig had got down from his plinth and gone to the toilet. His ta ...

Fawlty Towers: Encyclopedia II - British sitcom - Characteristics

Unlike American sitcoms, which employ teams of writers and attempt to cram as many jokes into half an hour as possible, the traditional British situation comedy is produced by just one or two writers. Although it may be argued that a sitcom's raison d'ĂȘtre is to pack as many gags as possible into a half hour, the more measured approach engendered by a single writer or a close writing partnership permits greater control over the programme's direction and a more structured approach to character and plot development. A need for rapid-fi ...
