Fame Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Mae West - Early life and career

Mae West was born Mary Jane West in Brooklyn, New York at 10:30 PM on August 17, in 1892, as stated by Marianne Dunn, quoting Paul Novak, companion to West for 20 years, or in 1893, according to other references. Her father was John Patrick West (1865-1935), Irish American, and her mother was a Bavarian German immigrant named Matilda ("Tillie") Delker-Doelger (1870-1930). Her sister and brother were Mildred "Beverly" West (1898-1982) and John Edwin West (1900-1964). The family was Protestant despite West's Catholic paternal grandmothe ...

Fame Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - The Rocky Horror Picture Show - Cult following

In spite of (or perhaps because of) its initial luke-warm critical and commercial reception, the film developed a cult following and it began playing at midnight at the Waverly Theater in New York City. People began shouting responses to the characters' statements on the screen. These mostly include melodramatic abuse of the characters or actors, vulgar sex jokes, puns, or pop culture references. Other audience participation includes dancing the Time Warp, throwing toast, water, toilet paper, hot dogs, and rice at the appropriate poin ...

Fame Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Pointer Sisters - The height of their success

Over the next few years they achieved their greatest commercial success and continued to demonstrate their versatility. In 1980 the medium tempo dance single, "He's So Shy", reached number three on the charts, and the following year a slow, sultry, country and western flavoured song "Slow Hand" reached number two. "American Music" and "Should I Do It" were 1950s pop, while "I'm So Excited" was a frenetic contemporary dance track. All were significant hits. With the advent of MTV the sisters were able to exploit their visual style and ...

As a young man, Berry served a three-year term in reform school for attempted burglary. He was later arrested for stealing a car. Chuck Berry had been playing a form of the "blues" since his teens and by early 1953 was performing with "Sir John's Trio," a band that played at a popular club in St. Louis. In May of 1955, he traveled to Chicago where he met Muddy Waters who suggested he contact Chess Records. Signed to a contract, that September he released a unique version of the Bob Wills song, "Ida Red," under the title, "Maybellene." The so ...

Fame Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Tornado - Social implications of tornadoes

Tornado damage to man-made structures from a tornado is a result of the high wind velocity and windblown debris. Tornadic winds have been measured well in excess of 300 mph (480 km/h). Tornado season in North America is generally March through October, although tornadoes can occur at any time of year. They tend to occur in the afternoons and evenings: over 80 percent of all tornadoes strike between noon and midnight. Trained weather spotters are often on alert to look for tornadoes and notify local weather agencies when severe weather ...

Fame Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Paul McCartney - 1990s

Following the release of the album Off the Ground, the similarly-scaled New World Tour took place in 1993. The live album capturing this tour, Paul Is Live, parodied the famous Paul Is Dead conspiracy of the late '60s - in both the title, and in the cover art which showed McCartney walking across the famous Abbey Road zebra crossing on his own - once again showing his willingness to acknowledge his Beatles past. (The dog with him is a descendant of Martha, his pet sheepdog from the Beatles years and inspiration for the song "Martha ...

Fame Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Talking Heads - History

Talking Heads married punk rock sensibilities with poppy sounds, clipped funk, art school intellectualism, and later, world music. In David Byrne, they had one of the most distinctive front men of the period; they remained popular during their lifetime, and their concert film Stop Making Sense (which was made at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood, and directed by Jonathan Demme) is widely acclaimed as one ...

Fame Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Dave Grohl - Foo Fighters

Following Cobain's death in April of 1994, Grohl retreated, unsure of where to go and what to do with himself. Initially, Grohl believed his future might be in drumming for other bands, and took a brief turn with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, including a memorable performance on Saturday Night Live. The band asked him to join permanently, but Grohl realized that his future lay elsewhere. Grohl decided to schedule studio time, again at Robert Lang's Studio, and quickly recorded a fifteen-track demo. With the exception of a single gu ...
