 | | | Fact: Encyclopedia II - Reality - FactA fact or factual entity is a phenomenon that is perceived as an elemental principle. It is rarely one that could be subject to personal interpretation. Instead it is most often the observed phenomena of the natural world. The proposition 'the sun rises in the east', is a fact. It is a fact for people belonging to any group or nationality regardless of which language they speak or which part of the hemisphere they come from. The Galilean proposition in support of the Copernican theory, that the sun is the centre of the solar system is one th ...

 | | | Fact: Encyclopedia II - Fact-value distinction - The Fact-Value ProblemThe problem of the unexamined acceptance of the fact-value distinction is two-fold. Firstly, the idea itself is not self-sufficient. The concept required great genius to arise, and there were particular political and historical conditions which contributed to its emergence. Therefore, is it true? Secondly, the blind use of the concept distorts the very tradition from whence it came. Thus the origin of 'facts' and 'values', or philosophy, is obscured from view. A ...

 | | | Fact: Encyclopedia II - Prolog - FactsProgramming in Prolog is very different from programming in a procedural language. In Prolog you supply a database of facts and rules; you can then perform queries on the database. The basic unit of Prolog is the predicate, which is defined to be true. A predicate consists of a head and a number of arguments. For example:
cat(tom).
This enters into the database the fact that 'tom' is a 'cat'. More formally, 'cat' is the head, and 'tom' is the single argument. Here are some sample queries you could ask a Prolog interpreter basing on this fact:
is tom a cat?
?- cat(tom).
yes.
