He attended Columbia University, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. However, due to his having played baseball for a summer professional league during his freshman year, Gehrig could not play intercollegiate baseball, and, at the time, was unaware that that jeopardized his eligibility to play any collegiate sport. But Gehrig was ruled eligible ...

| | | | | | Face of death: Encyclopedia II - Lou Gehrig - 2130On June 1, 1925 Lou Gehrig was sent in to pinch hit for light-hitting shortstop Paul "Pee Wee" Wanninger. The next day, according to legend, regular first baseman Wally Pipp showed up with a headache and begged out of the lineup, and was replaced by Gehrig. This gave rise to what is, arguably, one of sports' greatest misconceptions. The truth is that Pipp, and indeed the Yankees as a team, were slumping, and manager Miller Huggins made several lineup changes to boost their performance. The genesis of "Pipp's Headache" actually occurred a mon ...

| | | | Face of death: Encyclopedia II - Lou Gehrig - Ruth and GehrigFrom 1923-1934, the Yankees had what many consider the best offensive tandem in the history of baseball: George Herman "Babe" Ruth, Jr. and Henry Louis Gehrig. Long after their deaths, the duo still holds records for combined hitting between two teammates.
Both men were prominent figures in America's growing German community, but, outside of their prolific hitting, there were few, if any, similarities between the two men.
Babe Ruth had been raised in an orphanage (sent there by his father, who couldn't control him,) was very outspoken, arrogant, brash, and loved the la ...

| | | | Face of death: Encyclopedia II - Lou Gehrig - The Pride of the YankeesGehrig joined the Yankees mid-way through the 1923 season and made his debut on June 15, 1923 as a pinch hitter. Over his first two seasons, Gehrig would see limited playing time, playing in only twenty-three games, usually as a pinch hitter. He was not on the Yankees' 1923 World Series roster, however. In 1925, he batted 437 times for a very respectable .295 batting average with twenty home runs and sixty-eight runs batted in.
Inarguably, 1926 was Gehrig's breakout season. He batted .313 with 47 doubles, an American League leading 20 ...

| | | | Face of death: Encyclopedia II - Lou Gehrig - Something's WrongIn the Yankees' 1939 spring training, almost everyone in the Yankees organization realized that Lou Gehrig was no longer the ballplayer he once was. But even more alarmingly, he was also becoming increasingly clumsy and weak. They likely believed that it was due to the cumulative effect of injuries and the wear and tear fourteen years of professional baseball had put on his body. But at age 35, Lou Gehrig was still a relatively young man and his teammates thought that he had at least a couple of more seasons left in him. Although he was pressured by ownership to relegate Lou Gehrig to a part-time role, Joe McCarthy ...

| | | | Face of death: Encyclopedia II - Lou Gehrig - The Luckiest Man on the Face of the EarthThe New York Yankees celebrated "Lou Gehrig Day" on July 4, 1939, between games of a holiday doubleheader against the Washington Senators. Numerous people, including many from other major league teams, came forward to give Gehrig gifts and to shower praise on the dying slugger. The 1927 World Championship banner, from Gehrig's first World Series win, was raised on the flagpole. (Gehrig was on the Yankee roster in 1923 but did not play in that year's World Series, which the Yankees won.) Members of the 1927 Yankees, known as "Murderer's Row" ...

| | | | Face of death: Encyclopedia II - Lou Gehrig - DeathOn June 2, 1941, at the age of only 37, Henry Louis Gehrig died at his home in The Bronx neighborhood of Riverdale. The disease that robbed him of his life and baseball career would come to be known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease."
Lou Gehrig was cremated and interred at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.

| | | | | | Face of death: Encyclopedia II - XERF AM - Brief history of XERF 1947-1959The facilities of the old XERA border-blaster which had been created by John R. Brinkley, were confiscated by the Mexican government in 1939 and the license for Villa Acuña remained silent until 1947. In that year a new license was granted to Mexican investors who created a new radio station originally using the old facilities of the defunct XERA. The station came on the air with a power of 100 kW. For many years the station made money by selling its time after nightfall to American evangelists who broadcast in English to the United States.

| | | | Face of death: Encyclopedia II - XERF AM - Brief rebirth in 1980sIn 1982 Bob Smith (Wolfman Jack), ran into a radio engineer friend named Mike Venditti and he told Venditti that no one had been able to get XERF back on full power with its old RCA 250 kW tranmitter, because RCA did not have any manuals relating to the equipment. Venditti then approached Gonzalez with a business proposition.
XERF AM - Love 16.
In exchange for restoring the main RCA transmitter to active duty, Venditti asked Gonzalez to lease him the daytime hours from 6AM to 9PM. Because the statio ...

| | | | Face of death: Encyclopedia II - XERF AM - How XERF faded awayHowever time had run out for the super power XERF when attorney Arturo Gonzalez decided that he needed to retire. His own age and the additional legalities of brokering a contract that would involve yet another country (UK) would become more of a headache than he wanted at his time of life. Without his Texas sales connection the silent owners of the ancient transmitter facilities also knew that the days of XERF were finally over.
When Arturo Gonzalez bowed out the picture, the Mexicans were left without of date broadcasting facilities ...

| | | | Face of death: Encyclopedia II - Death of Joseph Smith Jr. - Attack by the mobBefore a trial could be held, a mob of about 200 armed men, their faces painted black with wet gunpowder, stormed the jail in the late afternoon of 27 June 1844. As the mob was approaching, the jailer became nervous, and informed Smith of the group. In a letter dated 10 July 1844, one of the jailers wrote that Smith, expecting the Nauvoo Legion, said "Don't trouble yourself ... they've come to rescue me."
The Carthage Greys reportedly feigned defense of the jail by firing shots or blanks over the attackers' heads, and some of ...
